  • Speedo..er.. not for sale

    Hi all

One for the moderators to peruse I reckon.

I recently bought an instrument cluster off ebay to try and resolve my speedo not working issues,
Unfortunately (because I didn't ask!) its a cable driven speedo, ie, non-electronic model and mine is electronic.
I can't use it but it seems daft just to bin it. If anyone out there needs one and will cover the postage, about a fiver, they can have the cluster for nowt.

Its as I bought it and AFAIK works.

I'm pretty sure mine's mechanical as it's a pre-facelift 2nd gen, did that bit also change after the facelift or am I wrong?

What the easiest way to tell (ie, without stripping out the dashboard)?

If it's the right type then I'm interested coz the perspex on mine is cracked.
I've got a plan and it's as hot as my pants!

Late 1991 was the change to electronic.
Easily spotted as there is a pin at 0mph for the needle to rest on. No pin then it's cable driven.

The clear covers are the same for both.

Perspex is fine, though might do with a polish

Oh and my dash strips in 5 mins:
Pull out - remove- drinks holder and remove uppermost philips screw.
Pop off ignition surround and remove 1 x philips screw.
Remove 2 x philips screws closest to door hinge and 1 x M6 (10mm AF) screw from driver's lower dash to allow movement of panel (no need to fully remove panel).
Pull off both heater control knobs and small fascia strip (carefully) immediately behind them.
Remove 2 x philips screws above perspex of cluster.
Carefully pry out dash surround from left to right, disconnecting plugs as you go (they go back on easy, only one way they can fit).
Undo 4 x philips screws around cluster. Pull forwards and disconnect all plugs into rear, including (I guess) speedo cable.
            Remove cluster.
            Refit in reverse.

OK, thanks for the info guys, mine is definitely the mechanical type.

It must have been another change with the facelift in 08/1991.

How would you like your £5 for carriage?
