Help !!! sound quality !!

Having changed my stereo to a top notch JVC one and replaced all the speakers with Pioneer ones it sounds sh*t !! It sounds fantastic without the engine running but looses all bass quality on normal roads etc. Is there any way of getting enclosures or a way of beefing the bass up without a sub. The polarity is correct.

Good quality sound deading (dynamat etc) will improve them, had the same trouble for my rear speakers. Good speakers sounded rubbish, bit of sound proofing and they sound a lot better, packed it around the speaker and on the bodywork.
As suggested in another thread go to a body shop and get some sound proofing stuff there its a lot cheaper.

haven't had a look at my speakers yet but usually they need to be mounted on a baffle board, basically to stop the speaker casing moving and absorbing the sound into movement, if they're just mounted on the platic trim then this would be the problem. anything will do just to stiffen up the mounting i usually use a bit of MDF with a hole cut out for the speaker and fix this on the rear of the trim, it doesn't matter what it looks like as it's hidden but check there's enough space behind there first otherwise you're looking at fitting some sort of pod that sticks out which can be a pain!

Right then,
If you want bass get a Sub - it needs to be a minimum of 8". for best results go to either 10" or 12" this depends on what you actually listen to. if you listen to classical 8" is fine on the other hand if you listen to R'n'B, Drum & Bass, Thrash Metal you'll really need something that can handle low sub-bass frequencies.
If you still have the OE speakers and they are working fine DO NOT bin them and certainly don't throw the little black boxes they fit into.
The stock Toyota ones are (front) 4" paper cone all range speakers @ 4 Ohms fitted into a purposely designed box which is ported.
(rear) 5 1/4" all range speakers @ 2 Ohms fitted into a purposely designed box which is ported & 2 x 3" Tweeters fitted into the rear headlining infront of the rear window.
I, like you, want decent sound in my truck and having built 2 sound-off cars, and fitted rucks of gear into my Artic, was not satisfied with the system that was already in place. I have looked at door builds, dash builds, boot builds and as Andy has said, sound deadening is a route to be followed.

In the end I opted to go with the OE gear, Why I hear you cry,
Basically because I couldn't face ripping the doors, dash,boot to bits just to fit stereo gear so I took a gamble and did it like this: -

Sony Head Unit with RCA Front & Rear connections to an Alpine 4 channel amp. This amp powers the OE speakers including the tweeters in the roof.
Dedicated Subwoofer RCA to an Alpine 2 channel amp. This amp is bridged into Mono mode and powers a 10" Jensen sub ( my mate owns an ICE shop and I got it cheap!!)
I have up graded all the cabling including the power feeds,fuses etc

This system is LOUD, CLEAR and perfectly fine for all types of music.
I took it back to the ICE shop and they had a listen and the comments were "for a stock set of Amp'd up OE speakers - it's bl**dy good"

If you want some more help either go to a reputable ICE dealer (this does NOT include Halfords!!!!! ), buy Total Car Audio (bi-monthly mag) or if I can help I will. (ask Draig what it's like - he's seen it!)

Thanks for the great advice, the reason i didn't want to fit a sub was to keep the boot area clear and to stop the missus throwing bags of shopping, push chairs etc at it. I'll try and the sound deadening way first and may be try an amp in there. I had to bin all the original speakers as the edging on the cones had all ripped and just rattled about.

Hey,
I have to admit that my Surf is only my second love (just). My first is music. Because of this I insist of having the best sound quality possible.
To get any kind of real bass you need a sub (6x9's on their own just wont be enough). Because of the shape of a surf and it not having a normal parcel shelf I have made myself a box. In there I have my sub (with an open front obviously), my amp and my 6x9's at either side. I have also carpeted it properly so not only does it look nice but the sound quality is improved (see first reply for why).
The box is the width of the boot, goes right up against the back seats (it's the same height as the seats too so it looks a bit like a small parcel shelf) and is about a foot long. When I need more space I can simply disconnect a couple of wires and then slide the box out as a whole.

Nice idea, I've been planning something similar myself. I was wondering if I should leave the original rear speakers connected as well as the new speakers I want to put in the box with the sub, so when I did have to remove the box to carry the big stuff, I wouldn't be left with just the fronts. Have you left the fitted rears connected, or bypassed them completely? I've never fitted or changed a system before so any help you could give would be great. Don't suppose you have any pics of your project that you could post?

Nice idea, I've been planning something similar myself. I was wondering if I should leave the original rear speakers connected as well as the new speakers I want to put in the box with the sub, so when I did have to remove the box to carry the big stuff, I wouldn't be left with just the fronts. Have you left the fitted rears connected, or bypassed them completely? I've never fitted or changed a system before so any help you could give would be great. Don't suppose you have any pics of your project that you could post?

When I got the surf the rear speakers were already disconnected (I believe the previous owner had something similar). To be honest I'm not too bothered about only having the front when I have to take it out but then I guess it depends on how often you would have it out.
No pictures right now (I'm not exactly a computer kind of guy) but I'm working on it and will post ASAP.

Leaving the OE speakers in is all well and good but the problem that i encountered is that the age of the speakers meant they sounded fatigued and eventually after a few weeks of abuse from a new high output pioneer headunit mean they began falling apart (seeing as they are only 15w speakers in the front), i have already gone for some new 10cm alpine fronts and as soon as i can be bothered i will attempt some sort of install with some alpine 13cm which i will hopefully get in the existing pods as these seem to do a good job of holding the speakers and increasing the base output.
But as rusty and others say a sub is definitely the way forward and my pioneer 10" is being installed in the next few weeks when i do the rear speaker. I will be mounting the amp and prolly a small fan in one of the little boxes in the side of the boot so that i can just have the sub enclosure and some speaker wire on show. Making removal much easier.
Just my 2p worth but i will let you know how the install goes and if it sounds anygood, if changing the front speaker was anything to go by then i would certainly expect so.

My front speakers were very thuddy, not bassy, found paper cone on both was unstuck, replaced both with Alpine 10cm cone speakers in original pods sound acceptable

I'm quite amazed at the bass output of the original rear speakers (assuming they are original). Changed the front ones for Kenwood 10 cm though as one was torn and sounded terrible.
