Spot light installation - please help

Hi,

i need a little advice, i have a 3.0l turbo diesel, 1994, kzn130 surf.

i have bullbars and want to put on a pair of spot lights. i have hella comet 500, but may upgrade them to hella rallye 1000 or 2000.

i want them to be activated on the high beam circuit, i do not want a seperate switch.

i have done a little research, but would like a little confirmation.

i was thinking the best way would be to give the spot lights their own power circuit with fuse direct from battery, and use a relay activated from the high beam circuit to activate the spot lights. I figured this was better then just connecting them directly to the highbeam circuit

assuming this is correct i have a couple of question:
- what size/type fuse for power circuit? what size/type relay?
- just one power circuit, one fuse and one relay for the spot lights? or 2 seperate circuits one for each spot light?
- how do i take feed from the high beam circuit, just literally connect a cable from either the right or left hand headlight?
-is it possible to take a feed from both the left and right highbeam circuits, so if one blows out, the other will activate the relay and thus the spot lights.

any other advice???

obviously if there is a much better way, please say?

Hi

I fitted mine using a 40amp relay 100amp fuse (that i had lying around) and generally connected direct from the wiring Loom under the stearing wheel cowel.

If you find the Live feed when the Main Beam is activated run a cable to the relay (I put mine under the Bonnet) then you need a Live feed from the battey and a earth.

I am sure there are a few electronic guys on here that will be able to tell ya about the Fuse and Relay Size, but for now you can start to plan the installation and see if you can find the live switched feed.

Whoa! Whoa! A 100AMP FUSE????? You must be able to run the national grid thru the cable you have in there.

Remember, the fuse is there to protect the WIRING and NOT the accessory.

NB. The red wire with green stripe on the back of either headlight is the high beam wire.

didn't want to start a new thread on this so i'll hijack this one if no one minds

First, i'm fitting halo spots to my surf i think i'll be able to follow the wiring diagram shown. for the Halo ring i guess i just use another relay and this time cut into the side light wiring? right?
fuse sizes suggestion? wiring for the halos are alot thiner on the spots, but i was just going to connect to same size wiring as for the full beam if thats ok?

Did you guys just keep the relays in the engine bay? just out the way and well covered?

I used 17amp wire for the spots, with one of those relays with a fuse on top under a plastic cover. (15a fuse)
Re: the halos, just splice into the sidelight wiring, no relay needed really.

Hi again, come up with a problem after gitting my spots.

Everything worked ok, Full beam on turned on my spots, and off . so i was happy, untill today. I flashed lights at someone and for some reason the spots stayed lit, while my full beams had gone off. I had to turn the lights on and off to get the spots off. I tried this again when at home and managed to get them to do it again,

Any ideas why this is happening? i'm 99% sure i wired them correctly...

Hi Matey

sounds like a stuck relay (common enough and easy to fix). Get someone to switch the lights main to full beam and see if the relay clicks. If not, its likely stuck on and drawing the power straight through without input from the main beam circuit. If it doesn't 'click' on the switchover, swap the relay for a new one. Easy :-)

thanks guys, yeah it was a sticky relay. swapped it over now they work just fine.
