  • Rear window problem

Help please,a day wasted on my 1994 3ltr surf. The rear window closes on the key and on the internal switch but will not open on either.I have changed three different relays and have continuity on all cable and connectors , and the lift motor works fine both ways with patch leads

I'd say it has to be a broken wire giving you a intermitent fault (maybe ok with the tailgate laying down, but not when upright???) Or the relay (behind the trim on the passenger side at the back!!
Lay the tailgate down, click the bits on the side to fool it into thinking the tailgate is shut, get someone to turn the key while you jiggle the cables around. It's a bit crude but any movement in the window would indicate it's the cable!

I have a similar problem. The window works on the interior switch but on the tailgate it only works to descend. If I find a solution, will add it here. :-) Also I found that:

      1) The driver's console can put the passenger window down but only very rarely put it up.
      2) The electric windows work erratically if the rear window child lock is activated from the driver's door; e.g. the driver's switch for the passenger window starts riving the tailgate window instead!

        Tailgate window problems

Thanks for the response lads,i have tried almost all i could thing off though i did not try tripping the door catches either side.I tried a multi meter while turning the tailgate key and am getting 12,49 volts in the lift position and nothing in the lower position.I have fitted three different relays,no improvement.I will have another look in a few days, thanks again, will let you know any results.Wincher.

i know you say the window motor works with patch leads and not with normal use on the key or button.I would say the wires that go into the tailgate are at fault. If theres a break in the wire in the conduit going from the body to tailgate then it may just be making a slight contact to show on a meter but not enough to power the motor. These wires are known to break as they are being bent and straightened all the time when the tailgate is open and shut

My Surf was suffering the exact same symptoms as Wincher described, turned out that the problem was the rear wiper not being correctly parked - there must be an interlock between the two.

              Worth a try!

Hi Lads, wincher again, tailgate now working but never found the what the problem actualy was,now working but not as Toyota intended.I bypassed the tailgate relays and switching power direct from the battery, through an inline fuse then an isolator switch then to a reverse polarity switch [found on ebay USA]then on direst to the lift motor. The two switches fit perfectly in the coin holder cutouts in the centre consol. The switches are both rocker switches and the reason for the isolator switch is to insure the reverse polarity switch is not left live when not needed. The cost of switches was about $14.60 with postage from the US for the reverse polarity one and £2.40 from any motorist shop,a lot chaeper than £269 for a new tailgate relay though i know that was not my problem.Good luck lads and i hope this solution to my problem helps out anyone with a similar problem.
