Well its at it again, it very nearly got traded in fer a vw transporter custom 2day,
anyway its seems the window will only go up now from the key and the switch, is that the relay done in as i can hear it click when operated down! , if so,is it repairable, has anyone got one, and where can i get a good deal on another relay??????

Yes could be the relay, yes they are repairable.

Check the motor by connecting 12v directly to it, then reverse the polarity and make sure it goes the other way.

Do a forum search on window relay and also check this out for the repair

I believe many window problems on Surf's have mechanical rather than electrical causes. My own experience was that that the motor was struggling against poorly lubricted runners and showed as an itermittant fault like yours. I cured the 'electrical' problem by properly lubing the windows gears & scissor runners with thick, spray on GREASE (never use WD40 it will dry up) and silcone grease in the window slides. I found the 'electrical problems' were fixed once the motor wasn't about to burn out forcing the window up and down.

it may be stupid but have you check the power window button on the driver door. this also controls the rear window.

After nearly destroying the rear panels getting to the relay, I never actually got there I discovered that the dam window wiper was not seating properly.
Give it a wiggle or a bash depending on how grumpy you are at the time.
I found this did the trick.
            Hope it helps.

One thing you can do as a quick bodge is cut the wires in the tailgate just before the motor. Crimp on some bullet connectors ( & a bit of extra wire if you want to run it outside the panel ).
Then all you need to do is do swop the connections to fool the relays into thinking up is down etc.
This means you can be sure of not being stranded with the window down !
Also tells you the motor is working correctly or not.
Its normal for the "up" relay to go 1st as thats the one doing the most work Lubricating all the seals is a good tip for all your windows tho'
