  • noisy glow plug relay 1988 2L-T SSR

    Hi,

With the ignition turned on, regardless of engine temperature, the no.1 glow plug relay buzzes (or more accurately, rattles on and off in a very loud and embarassing way). I don't think this is normal.
I've tested the No1 relay and it checks out ok. No2 relay OK too. Temp sensor and manifold resistor both OK.
I've also tested each glow plug (disconnected bus bar) for continuity and they seem OK.
Disconnecting the current sensing resistor stops the noise but then the engine won't fire.

    Anyone got any suggestions please?
    cheers
    Si

    tried replacing that relay?

My glowplug relay did that on my breaker when it had sat for a couple of months, batteries were completely shot, and the terminals were dirty and loose though, was a b'stard to get any power into them even with a jumpstart.

Thanks for getting back to me.

As I say, the No1 relay tests OK independently.

As does the No2 relay and all the component parts....independently. The only thing I haven't been able to test is the timer box.

Well, I'm off to the breakers this weekend. First thing I'm going to try is swapping out that timer box. Someone else told me the capacitors in there break down with age and can cause this.

However, if that doesn't work I'll try replacing the No.1 relay...and keep swapping stuff out until it stops.

The battery is less than a year old so, unless my alternator is shot, I can't believe it would be that.

I'll post my findings for future reference anyway!
