If its anything like most toyota's you can remove the tank and on the top of it will be the fuel sender unit, this can be removed and cleaned, they tend to oxidise with all the fuel and causes a poor electrical connection.

Unfortunaterly the only way to test it is to run the tank to 6litres (well this is what we do on the Avensis and Auris) the car is filled with 6.1 litres of fuel and then once it has gone through roll road, steering angle, headlight aim and brake test, the lowlevel light will be on, thats why there is never any fuel in a new car. (only fond this out when we filled a car with 20litres of fuel whilst testing the fuel fill equipment, Toyota QA where not happy, they had to drain out the tank and start again)

Don't trust it, mine is a pathological liar. Best bet is; fill up, drive 350km, refill then repeat Ad infinitum...

But do the repeat part slowly or you will loose the will to live.

That's (to quote Micro$oft) is a feature of surfs

when I ran dino I used to refill at just under 1/4 tank left, the tank was usually never below 1/2 once I ran veg

I've always run all my vehicles untill the fuel light comes on, that's what it's there for, but if the bulb is gone, you have two choices, fix it or keep it topped up.

Although my fuel guage is a pathelogical liar, the fuel light comes on with about 10 litres left, as I've teted it by running it to empty.
