  • Dip and High beam problems

Took the spotlights off the other day to fabricate a bracket to fit 4 spots to replace the 2, i had noticed before that when the high beam is on (stick pushed back) then the spot lights come on but when i flash (stick forward) then it seemed brighter, didn't take much notice of it at untill spot lights had been removed, then (found this out on the way home from work, at night) when i pull the lighting stick forward i get main beam, as you would expect but when i push the stick forward for continiouse high beam i loose all lights (not good.!!!) push it back to middle ant the lights come back.

I have had a look on the wiring diagram but cant see how it has been split, as it seems to be only one cable to do both, flash and continiouse ie high beam. any idea wher to start looking, cant see any dodgy wiring under the steering wheel but haven't looked to hard.

Also do i need to have the spot lights switched seperaterly from the dip and high beam lights for the MOT, it is a job i am going to do but just wondering if it was a requirement.

sounds like a dodgy switch / dirty or burn't out contacts, i'd concentrate on the switch at the base of the stalk to start with.

Are the switches serviceable or are they sealed units, or are the contacts visible (wishful thinking) do any other indicator stalks fit e.g. Carina-e, I know Toyota are renowned for continual use of fittings over the range, most of the bolts and fittings haven’t changed even on the latest cars (Why reinvent the wheel).

pretty sure i've heard of them being cleaned so in that sense i guess they gotta be user servicable, don't know about any other models using the same switches

Did a bit more digging and found this

          http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...eadlight_Combo

Seems like this is a common problem with this type of stalk, with the switch taking the full load of the two lights the contacts burn out, i thing ill mod it to switch through a relay once i've sorted things out.

I have also read that the switches are the same as the old carina-e and corola but ill check that out next time i go to the scrap yard, also it is posible to get a switch that operates the oposite way around to standard, if you can find one of a LHD car, ie indicators on the left, wipers on the right, that might save me indicating when it rains.

Anyway thanks for your input Ian, ps i finally got the spare wheel brackets fitted, now i can have two spare wheels on the car, much better than on the drive
