  • 4WD still not working

While at Tony's on Saturday, we had a look at the 4WD and checked a few things, all hoses seem OK, vacuum was working fine - and the relay clicks, the motor works and everything engages (with the ignition power only) now - when the engine is on, all I get is a load of clicks from the relay - and nothing else - no 4WD light (ignition power or engine on).......why??????????????

Tony has disabled the sensor for the diff oil temp too - and that's not made any difference.

Sorry to make any suggestions above ma station, i dont think i could diagnose summit tony cant. But are the solenoids on inside of wing workin? Also wiv mine someone have put in a little valve up from the altenator but put it in wrong way round so couldnt suck it.

I was also told to take off the pipes stage by stage to see if suction is getting there so, altenator, ignition on and button pressed of course, both solenoids, filter cylinder, up to turbo etc, when suction stops thats where problem may be.

Thats what i was told anyway, cos mine was wonky to start wiv. Can you find someone else wiv a 3.0 thats workin and listen for extra clicks, even cahnge over the control unit to see if it works in yours, then maybe diagnose that, as on mine one relay was gubbed but still clicked.

Just some ideas of probably little use.

i dont profess to be an expert by any means on surfs, but id guess you wont get 4wd light on till it actually engages and earths the switch,as a shot in the dark could be a power supply issue to the relay when ign is in position 2, have you any third party imobiliser plumbed in at position 2 ?

Maybe a stoopid question, seeing as Mr N has had a look, but is there oil in the front diff? If theres no oil, then the ADD won't engage for the same reason as if the oil temp sensor detects hot oil.

if the oil was low would it engage in ign position one?

The ignition needs to be on or the engine running for the VSVs to work to engage 4WD.

sorry see that he said it engages with ignition on but not when it runs, would it engage with no oil whilst not running?

Ah, then it would indeed sound like a vacuum problem. Vacuum is present in the reservoir allowing two or three presses of the 4WD button when the ignition is on, but in Andy's case, is depleted as soon as the engine is running.
Maybe there are a couple of vac pipes fitted in the wrong order or the vacuum filters on the front diff are blocked or something.

id of thought it would leak off quicker with engine off than with the engine running, cant see were it would loose more vacum running, but sure you may be abl to point out, turning into a very intersting thread this as im learning a bit about add cheers.

lol a little looking at that id say it dosent work any different with the engine running or with ign on, the only thing different when not runnin is there no vacum created and tank can empty, so if its ok not running my first port of call would be to see why that add relay wasnt holding on vsv4 when it was running then go from there, like i said before im still learning add so could be well wrong

andy's diff oil level was fine , i understand it sometimes engages 4wd [no light on though]but it just comes out of 4wd when it feels like it

i may have got it wrong though

That's right! 4WD was working intermittantly.....I'll have to pull the hoses off one by one on the 27th and see what gives......so ignition on will work a bit, but engine on, no vacuum - although Tony did say that with the engine on he could feel the vacuum working fine...and the diff oil is full.......
