  • Fog Lamps

I know there are a lot of rules & regs about lamp sizes, height and width from edge of vehicle etc.

Are there any rules about rear fog lamps ? Must it have a red lense ? How big does it have to be ? Can I use the reverse lamp mounted in the rear cluster ? ( Coz I want too )

It must show red however the lens can be clear. The reversing lamp is ok as long as it is the drivers side you use. Also the switch must be illumiated. I am also pretty sure that it must only come on with sidelamps at least illuminated.

I got a pair at the scrapyard off a 1991 Honda Integra which are fitted in the rear bumper - cut in with the aid of an angle grinder. They now look good and are well out of the way.

    Cheers

I'll probably do the reverse lamp foglamp mod sometime this week... maybe it could go into the forum's techie bit ?

Jim, yes I do have an oil light, however it isn't working cos I pulled the bulb out of it when I last took the dash out to put that bulb in the hard suspension lamp (didn't have a spare).

Anyway here is the picture of my fog lamp mod.

              Hi All

There is a full explanation with pictures at,

              http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/

It shows painting the lamps but you can buy them and save the mess.

The only difference Phil is I'm doing to a car with a wheel carrier & reverse lamps in the wing - very much the same, just the wiring's bound to be different

Let me know how you get on. I would be very interested because I also have a wheel carrier. The only thing I was worried about was how good the light would be because the actual white lens is quite small.

If you take photo's and send them to the showmesome site He (Simon I think) will probably add them to the write up.

                  Good luck

                  Phil.

I'm a little sceptical about painting a bulb and how much light will get out through it..... so I'm doing it now !

I know you can buy red lamps (bulbs) if all else fails.

I'm not sure if there is a regulation size for a fog lamp - I guess I'll only find that out if I get stopped and am read the riot act

                    Hey ho !

don't suppose the police will pull you unless you have the fog light turned on on a sunny day!... just the MOT that might be fussy about it . if it fails an MOT just whack the old one back and get the free retest... not losing anything?!

Don't know what you reckon to my about using the high intensity led strips, between the bumper and towbar (if fitted). Just an idea and thoroughly modern looking to boot
                        It's only a hobby!

Sound's like a good idea, but we ain't got a towbar... I quite fancy having it hidden away in the cluster - no sticky out bits at all

I've had a go at the red painted bulb theory and it works nicely

                            Hi all,

I have just found the MOT Testers website and they have a Q+A section. I have posted the question about any regulations stopping us from using the rev. light lens. I will let you all know the outcome!!

                            Phil.
