Hello again.Went to get a 2nd opinion on the gearbox problem yesterday and got meself another one,it won`t start ! I`ve checked all the obvious things and it all seems to be in order.I`m a plant fitter by trade and run a ` 58 landy and a Harley, both rebuilt,so I`ve got some idea of what I`m doing. It was running fine last time out ,gearbox aside,so it`s a bit baffling. The problem appears to be with the injection pump. When you crack the pipes there is no fuel being injected. The diagnostic system is showing a single regular flashing check light which is supposed to mean no problems.Does anyone know if the ECU prevents starting if it senses a problem?. I`ve had a problem on a Saab that cuts the power to the fuel pump if a problem occurs.I was wondering if the Surf had a similar system .I`ve had a look through some of the sites shown on the forum, but can`t find anything that seems to throw any light on it.Any help much appreciated.

there are sensors which cut the engine, eg. if it's not in park, if you change into reverse while going forwards so maybe it's all connected there somewhere?nee nar nee nar, i'm a fire engine!

The Neutral positioning switch stops the starter motor operating. There is however a fuel cut solenoid. This diagram may help.

SUMMAT i FORGOT TO MENTION
Thanks for the replies so far.The thing I forgot to mention was that when I tried the diagnostic test, the o/d off light was flashing at the same speed as the check light.I don`t know if that is normal with that system ,or if its a pointer to the problem.I`m glad I did`nt sell the old landy!Don`t get mad,get even !

Paul,
If the O/D light flashes when you perform a diagnostic test then it means that you have a problem with your transmission. I don't know if your SURF has the "old" OBD or if it's the "new" OBDII. To retrieve tha codes from the "old" OBD system:
1. Turn ignition on. DO NOT start engine. Depress OD switch on shift lever to ON position. If OD switch is off then the light will not blink.
2. Install jumper wire between terminals TE1 and E1.
3. Note number of flashes from "OD OFF" light. If system is normal the light will blink 2 times per second.
Note: A stuck solenoid will not set a trouble code. Trouble codes are only set for circuit malfunctions, not mechanical failures.
Transmission trouble codes are two digits. For retrieving two digit trouble codes, please refer to a post I submitted in the mechanical section in response to "No Green Turbo Light"
I hope that this will be of help.butch
