  • Rear window motor replacement

    From my Dad...

Firstly premier Toyota wanted £280 pounds(4 hours labour) to do this job saying whole window and mechanism has to come out. From start to finish with no prior knowledge of job I did it in less than 2 hrs.

1)open door and lay flat and remove inner covers and plastic cover to give complete access..outer trim clips out with aid of a large screwdriver to start off then do rest carefully by hand .inner trim has a few screws.just pull plastic cover off by hand, try to keep in one piece as easy to replace using sellotape.

2)Use an 8mm,aprox 5 ins long small spanner, feel under the motor and you can clearly feel the heads of the 3 securing bolts..using feel only undo each bolt, this takes umpteen goes at a few turns at a time and is the key to whole job.patience is a virtue, as you will get them out in time.be careful to remove each one at the end of thread by hand so you dont drop them into door..

3)Remove motor and you will probably find drive cog has been worn smooth by window mechanism.not possible to repair as tried to see if cog could be replaced.no deal.

4)Check window mechanism by hand ,should now move smoothly up and down.I sprayed well with wd40 and operated by hand a few times to give smooth motion.when window fully raised check connections for rear screen heater left side bottom of window, in my case one wire was off and had to renew plug fitting.

5)move window to fully down position and fit new motor, prior to this you have to use bolts to make a thread in each hole of new motor.easily done..fit bottom two bolts and fully tighten. connect cable to motor .This will give you drive on the key, providing you fool the electronics by making the two latches, one either side of door with a screwdriver.move the two clicks each so latches are closed.now motor should drive on the key.

6)operate window to raised position, this will now give you room away from the mechanism to fit the third bolt to the motor..

7)fully drop window and fit a)plastic cover using tape if necessary, outer metal cover and outer trim pane.

8)lastly close door, may have to operate door handle to close to reset latches.

JOB DONE.Reckon with this knowledge allow one and a half hours..

    cheers and 73s

      rear window motor

Cool post, but Ill adda couple of points gleaned from experience of takin mine out a few times. The cog is repairable, if yur carefull. Remove it from the motor and carefullt rebuilt the teeth with weld and then shape down to final profile with a dremmel. While the motor is out, check the rubber shock pad under the drive unit ( i refitted my motor an it lasted two operations before it split). If it looks perished or at all dodgy, araldite the plate back onto the rubber bush, drill and countersink a coupla holes in the plate and secure with rivets. Then, while the motor is out, take the three mounting bolts and hacksaw a small slot in the threaded end. When you come to refit it, you can fit small screwdriver down the bolt hole and screw the bolts back home just leaving a final nip up for the spanner. Speeds up any future removal as well.
      Happy window winding!

I'd like to add you should have a wire coat hanger to hand, to bend into a hook so you can retrieve your 8mm spanner after it drops down the tailgate.
Hold my beer and watch this

how the motor works and one more tip

have just done this, and was really struggling with the motor bolts until i tried taking the motor out from the inside, with the window up. the bolts are much easier to get out in this position, because the window's not in your way and there's loads more room to get your hand behind the motor.

on mine though, the plastic gear seems fine, but the rubber cover inside the gearbox is all perished (mostly missing in fact) and allowing the plastic gear to move when driven but slipping on the inner (winder mechanism) gear.

how does this come apart? mine all seems pretty tight and i cant seem to get it apart. are you saying its possible to araldite to fix to fix this?

                cheers

Great timing with the thread. Just about to do my rear door and replace the relays at the same time. Hoping all goes well

If you take the four m6 bolts out of the winder mechanism you can ease it all back to improve access to the motor bolts.
