You can get away with the standard speakers for now however I think 6" will fit in the back and 4" in the front. I think that some people have managed to get 6x9 in the back however this involves some cutting. The standard speakers are active units with a sound box and some electronics in them. Removing the active stuff and the sound box gives you a reasonable amount of space.

A Standard 1 din unit will fit straight in but you will need a blanking plate or one of the 1 din tray units to fit below as the hole is a 2 din unit.

You can also fit a 2 din unit straight in in most cases. I've got a double din Sony wx-c570r unit in mine running through the standard speakers and it sounds good, also has 2 pairs of RCA outputs for amps and also supports a steering column mounted remote (which I have.

Got the unit off eBay for �150 and I'm very happy with it.

A CD changer will fit in either one of the two cubby holes in the rear - before the Sony I had a JVC with a 12CD stacker and that fitted nicely.

When I picked up my surf, the dealer I got it from had removed the double din sony carrizzo radio that was in it when I test drove the vehicle, and fitted a cheap Maystar single din and made a hash up of it. Claiming he was doing it for my good because it would not cover all the frequencys needed in the uk, so I went back and got the sony back, but they had thrown one of the adaptors, so to cut along story short i purchased a new panasonic cd/radio keeping the original speakers and it sounds great, and had it fitted properly, also at the same time had a cat 2 alarm/immobilser fitted, this cost me �300, but well worth it, any good car security company can fit them, it takes about 2.5 hours, and apparantly they fit them quite regualry to Surfs, I now have remote central locking instead of just off the drivers door lock, and better insurance cover.

cat 2 is just an immobiliser, these are available for �90

cat 1 is an alarm, for �300 i'd imagine you got a cat 1.
they are all much of a muchness and start around the same basic price... adding extra's, remote locking, total closure, etc. will pump the price up a bit.
start off with a good base unit alarm and you can add anything... remote start, cold start, pager, microwave... goes on and on.

Right then, I speak from experience!!
If you want bass get a Sub - it needs to be a minimum of 8". for best results go to either 10" or 12" this depends on what you actually listen to. if you listen to classical 8" is fine on the other hand if you listen to R'n'B, Drum & Bass, Thrash Metal you'll really need something that can handle low sub-bass frequencies.
If you still have the OE speakers and they are working fine DO NOT bin them. The stock Toyota ones are (front) 4" paper cone all range speakers @ 4 Ohms fitted into a purposely designed box which is ported.
(rear) 5 1/4" all range speakers @ 2 Ohms fitted into a purposely designed box which is ported & 2 x 3" Tweeters fitted into the rear headlining infront of the rear window.
,I, like you, want decent sound in my truck and having built sound off cars, fitted rucks of gear into my Artic, was not satisfied with the system that was already in place. I have looked at door builds, dash builds, boot builds and as Andy has said, sound deadening is a route to be followed.

In the end I opted to go with the OE gear, Why I hear you cry,
Basically because I couldn't face ripping the doors, dash,boot to bits just to fit stereo gear so I took a gamble and did it like this

Sony Head Unit with RCA Front & Rear connections to an Alpine 4 channel amp. This amp powers the OE speakers includin the tweeters in the roof.
Dedicated Subwoofer RCA to an Alpine 2 channel amp. This amp powers a 10" Jensen sub (my mate owns an ICE shop and I got it cheap!!)
I have up graded all the cabling including the power feeds

This system is LOUD, CLEAR and perfectly fine for all types of music.
I took it back to the ICE shop and they had a listen and the comments were "for a stock set of Amp'd up OE speakers - it's bl**dy good"

If you want some more help either go to a reputable ICE dealer (this does NOT include Halfords!!!!! ), buy Total Car Audio (bi-monthly mag) or if I can help I will. ( ask Draig what it's like - he's seen it!)

that looks very tidy rusty,
out of interest how far does the sub protrude into the boot space?
i've resisted the idea of getting a sub cos i didn't want to lose too much space but that looks quite neat, and being able to remove it is a bonus.
How's it fixed in place?

can you give me an idea of how much i'm looking at for a decent amp and sub? i suppose second hand is a good way to go?
