ay up. i have made the mistake of trying to fit a uk stereo now before i get diverted to another page there is more.
when connecting the radio i some how managed to break my tail lights, side lights, guage lights and automatic shift lights. does anyone know how i've done this? or if there's a secret bank of fuses i haven't found yet. have tried under t bonnet and in drivers foot well and there ok. the bulbs are fine. not sure if its a relay or not. i don't hear a contactor making when i turn me side lights on.
any help would be brill as my car is in tiny pieces and am out of ideas.

The fuses for the items you've listed are in the footwell fusebox. ( assuming you have a 2nd gen Surf, Give us a clue please) Also I think there is a tailight relay down there too.

This comes with an 'I know nothing' warning, but aren't there fuses hidden behind the glove box too? Not that it's likely to be anything to do with that (I know nothing).

its a 2.4 td 1993 2nd gen sorry was in a bit of a flap before. fuses that i've found appear ok but not sure which relay to check have had a look at t contacts and that and they seem fine. i've also checked pins in plugs and all are present and correct. was thinking about putting my hand in my pocket and getting a bloke with a box of tricks to sort it for me.
checked behind the glove box and there are a few fuses back there but nothing that concerns me and there ok as i checked them just in case.

I think you have blown your sidelight fuse, which is in the fuse board in the drivers footwell. I think it is the second fuse back from the front of the car, in the middle row.

got it working again it was a fuse after all it didn't look gone but i started to replace the 1's in t foot well n it worked after all. cheers guys you've been a great help.
just 1 more thing rear speakers how on earth do you take 2 wires from a uk radio and attach them to the 5 wires per speaker in the jap truck?

The rear speakers have their own amps, but don't ask me anything about the wiring. I don't go for boom boom in my vehicles!

that sounds strange. am not into boom boom much anymore either but i would like them to work lol but it does explain all the wires and the reason why i can't get the airel to work when turning the raido on n off

Hi First! Did you buy a sterio adaptor? It plugs between the existing plugs and the rear of the new sterio and makes life a dam site easier, Mine worked fine with this (Halfords do em), You need to get the rear side panels off to get at the rear speaker boxes (watch out for the plastic clips that hold the panels on as some are bound to snap off), Im in the middle of doing the rears myself, Gonna try to connect new speakers to the existing two wires and see how it sounds, Not to sure about bypassing the amps but i assume its possible to trace the wires through the board, Ian

I tried with the amps - sounded horrible, tried bypassing the amps - didn't work and I don't know why. so I just ran new cables to the back (only took half an hour once I got my fingers out and started.

However with the bigger speakers bolted straight into the plastic facia it vibrated, so i had to put a sheet of aluminium in and bolt through to stiffen it up.

For sound deadening/anti sound vibration in my Mini, I used that stick on roof flashing . It's cheaper than 'Dynamat' and does the same job. easier to work with too as it's on a roll.

The active speakers in the rear can be fed from the Aux Amp output if your radio/cd has one. That is what I plan to do because my rear speakers sound nice and clean. The front ones are shot and wil be replaced.

When I got my surf I chopped off the plastic connector end bits. Worked out which were the live,neutral and earth they are usually the thicker ones but the colours are different being japanese ( is neutral the same as earth in a car???) and what you have left should be the speaker wires. Take the glovebox off and you'll see what the colour of the wires are from that speaker. Wire them up to the corresponding wires from the stereo, e.g. front-left rear-right etc. Do this with all the speakers. The easy way to see the speaker wires for the rear ones is to take the small square piece of plastic out just behind the rear seats with a screwdriver, shine a torch down and the wires will be there at the back of the speakers. Check to see if the stereo and speakers work properly. If they do, then tape up or isolate any other damn wires you find. There are a few!!! If they don't work take singing lessons!!!

Another point, buy LOTS of fuses!!!

The only neutral you will find in a car is in the gearbox usually between Reverse and Drive if its automatic. House wiring has a neutral because it is a return for the 240V.
