Stuttering Starter

With the Surf having been relegated to town work over the last few weeks, I thought it best to take it out for a decent run at the weekend with a tank full of diesel and some Injector Cleaner for good measure.

150 miles later, starting for the return trip, the starter stuttered, and its done it after every stop. Even this morning from cold. It seems to turn the engine once, pause for half a second, then carry on as normal.

Is this a sign of impending starter motor failure? Or is it something more subtle?

Ah. Battery no.1 (2?) - driver's side - had become disconnected, battery no.2 (1?) - passenger's side - is growing fur on one terminal. Obviously been struggling a bit.

I'll sort it out at the weekend when there's daylight.
