L4 not engaging or at least consistently?

Chap who did some work on her to get her ship shape reckoned it might just be a wire by the stick as when he moved it back & forth &/or pressed 4wd button it did occasionally put light on dash & er could here the thingy (AKA Si cant remember technical name for it) clicking in. H4 works OK (not used it thou fear not)
Does that sound like a common fault & easy to check out, cough how do you (or a technical idiot like me) get the surround off a manual 96 to see if any frayed wires or such like presuming that's where they will be?
Er anyway i hope that made sense any cunning plans?

Sounds like contact wires or the ADD not working properly [vacuum]...sorry cant help further but do a seacrh for the ADD.
