No problems at all virtually all uk head units will fit, single or double din, if you use a single din you can buy a cubby hole from Halfords or most I C E shops which just fills in the spare space and give a bit more storage for all the junk that cars seem to attract.
Try a search and you will find more than enough info on the subject.Laugh!!! I nearly bought my own beer.

You will also be better off buying the toyota-to-standard ISO connector cable(available from this site ), it will save you having to worry about altering wiring to fit. You can then fit any U.K stereo of your choice/budget. There are no voltage problems with fitting this type of stereo and also then no problems with U.K frequency....HTH..

Halfords special
When I installed a radio as there wase'nt anything working,
I found terrible trouble with the width of the new unit in relation to the bracket to mount to.
Managed to get it to go in and work, but should the cubby box fit either above or below the replacement radio.
electric aerial worked straight off BTW!

You don't need to buy an adaptor to make the radio fit the hole: just the ISO adaptor leads.
I've just picked up my Surf, and fitted an Alpine single DIN in place of the Japanese radio. The cubby hole under the radio is bolted to the radio: the Alpine head unit has the same mountings, so you can just detach the brackets from the old unit, and fit the new radio, complete with brackets and cubby hole.
I've drilled a hole in the back of the cubby hole, so I can fit a lead to plug into an iPod. It all goes back together very neatly: no need to chop anything about.
You'll also need an aerial adaptor, to change it over to the ISO style aerial: I got one from Halfords for £3.99.
The standard speakers on a series 2 SSRX are surprisingly good with a reasonable head unit!

JUST BOUGHT A SECOND HAND JVC HEAD UNIT AND 12 DISC CHANGER OFF FLEABAY FOR £40, PUT THE STEREO ON TOP AND POCKET ON BOTTOM LOOKS OK BUT I WOULD OF LIKED A UK SPEC DOUBLE DIN UNIT AS THE BUTTONS ARE BIGGER SO I CAN PRESS THE RIGHT BUTTON INSTEAD THREE AT A TIME WITH MY LARGE DIGITS .CHEERS JOHN................
