Is your electric fan stuck on?
If so that should be for the electric fan. Normaly the switch is closed and opens when hot which activates the fan. Hence when you have the ignition on and pull the connector off it switches the fan on

That bottom brass bit certainley doesn't look normal to me. By that, I mean factory fitted.

Aftermarket something or other! Fan? Switch to switch on (or off) a heater?
              It just does, OK?

I've been thinking that, if the temp gauge sender is there, and theres one for the electric fan, then the third / broken sensor must be an after market 'add on' for something, maybe a fuel heater? so as long as it dose'n leak, forgedt about it!

Am I making any sense, 'cos I've been drinking port this evening.

The broken one is for an aftermarket temp gauge or switch of some kind. If not there then buy an extra temp gauge and install the new sensor there.

I suspect she will tell me later there's a big scratch or something that's "appeared" on the Mondeo!
