Sounds more like an alarm/immobiliser unit to me, the unattatched wire could well have been an aerial for the remote operation.

There is an immobiliser fitted so it could well be it!
It is operated from a (struggling for term) push button unit on keyring (fob?)
Could the offending wire be the aerial ???

Thankyou guys, I am convinced that it is the immobiliser;
When I taped the wire up I also neatly coiled it up and tucked it away and now I need to be closer to the truck for the remote to work. I thought the battery was getting low but now I don't think so!
Slowly but surely everything is now making sense!
