  • Black box under radio?

Before I start, thank you to Bushwacker for answering my query today in the 3.0 section, as is often the case the answer was staring me in the face once I had been told
Anyway, I fitted and CD/tuner in the Surf today to replace the Jap radio/cassette. All went well thanks to some research on here beforehand (this forum is a Godsend). Whilst I had the bottom of the dash removed I noticed a black box below where the radio sits - on the floor in fact. Out of this box comes a loom of wires that goes off to a larger loom near the steering column. The interesting / worrying thing though was the single black wire coming from the back of this black unit; the end of the wire is stripped back as if it was once connected somewhere and hanging loose. For now I have just taped it up but what can it be?
Oh and this box sits alongside / on top of another black box which has writing along the lines of "Computer 4WD Control" but is not connected to it in any way.
    Any takers please?
    If you're gonna have one ...... have a good'un!

Sounds like turbo timer and the black wire maybe an earth wire that was dissconnected to disable it to satisfy the insurance people.

Thanks mate, what does a turbo timer do? - does it stop you turning off the engine to soon to allow the turbo to slow up?
If so why would it affect insurance?

It allows the engine to run on without the key in the ignition to allow the turbo to 'wind down'. Leaving the engine running in an un-attended vehicle is naughty and insurers won't like it either.

Got you - I take it that they would not be standard eqpt then?

Nope. There is a 'manual' version of a turbo timer though, after a spot of driving, especially high speed or lots of sustained high revving, just park your truck at your destination and just sit there with your engine ticking over for a couple of minutes.

                  is it automatic?

mine's to the left bottom of the steering column stuck to the underside of the dash... so you can see the pretty lights and push the buttons.

No buttons / switches or anything on this box, just loads of wires out of one end and the single black wire out of the other.

Whatever it is, its probably not originally eqpt as it has a couple of mounting holes in the casing but is not physically attached to anything.
I will probably try earthing the wire using a fuse and see what happens - I'll keep you posted.

Mine has got about five or six little slider switches that are set in a secret sequence and the unit is stuck out of sight.

Nope, I just left as it is. I think it had a remote start as well once 'cos I got this little antenna thingy clipped to the drivers side sun visor.
When the turbo timer is activated, a little red LED lights up on the antenna.

Sounds more like an alarm/immobiliser unit to me, the unattatched wire could well have been an aerial for the remote operation.
Laugh!!! I nearly bought my own beer.
