  • Vehicle's speed sensor wire

    Hi All,

    A little wiring help required:

I’m thinking about fitting a GPS unit to my beloved Surf. The particular model I’m looking at requires a connection to be made to the navigation unit from the vehicle's speed sensor (VSS).

Does anyone know where this cable would be and what colour it is? I’m assuming that it would come from the ECU to the dials, but I’m not even sure where the ECU is located 

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Many thanks…

Hmm, seem's to be a couple of posts about this, both suggesting different wires:

This one says "green & blue wire"

but this one says to use a cable that is "lilac with red hoops going to a plug where a green cable"

      So which is it?

could be that older models have a different colour code... try both, one must be right!

The ecu is in the pasenger footwell behind the plastick bit. On my 92 2.4 it was the green & blue wire on the first plug (nearest to the bulkhead) on the ECU.

I installed my AVIC-X1 sat nav over the weekend and, as stated in this post, the VSS was the "green & blue wire on the first plug (nearest to the bulkhead) on the ECU in the passenger foot well."

So that's all sorted. I was meant to find a cable for hand break on/off for safe DVD playback, but ended up just grounding the cable from the head unit so it thinks the hand break is always on

Finally, it needed connecting to a cable that signals to the unit when you're in reverse. I'm a bit stuck on this one. I couldn't find anything on this forum so decided to connect it to the reversing buzzer behind the speedo etc. For what ever reason, this doesn't seem to work

Do any of you peeps know if there's a reverse signal wire anywhere in/arround the dash?

              Many thanks

i,m fitting exactly the same unit to mine this weekend so thanks for the help on the speed senser wire as for the reverse wire i think the easiest way would be to run directly back from the reverse light its self

Well, it's a great system, I'm sure you'll love it

I had the same idea, about connecting to the reversing lights, but mine are built into the tail gate. I couldn't find any easy way to get to the wires through the electric window cover bit so gave up in the end and attached to the speedo cluster. I even checked all the cables around the auto box, and under the passenger seat to no avail. If you find a suitable cable do let me know

Some quick tips for you - I bolted my hideaway unit under the passenger seat - there's a good flat spot for it there. Also, having the seat out makes access to the dash easier.

There's a good forum if you haven't seen it here:

                          Hi,

I made the Avatar from the box cover for the Tamiya 1/32 model of the Surf. I don't have a high-res copy unfortuantly.

This is the original image I used

But I think you'll need a 300dpi version for printing. Why not buy the model (there's one on eBay here ) and scan the box?

                          Hope this helps...
