Should I fit a turbo timer?

Having just arrived at my destination, I never seem to have the time to sit still in the car with the engine idling. So I was wondering whether I should fit a turbo timer. They look relatively easy to install and not too expensive (at least not from ebay) but what are the implications for
1. I have a CAT1 alarm fitted with imobiliser and
2. Is it legal - I read on one of the posts here that it's not.
3. Any recommendations as to which make/model?

Its a matter of personal choice. In theory there are 2 options 1) fit a TT 2) drive gently for the last few minutes of your journey

1) Does it lock the doors too? See if you can find out if it will work in conjunction with a TT. Some alarms will lock the doors and then when the TT kills ignition the doors will unlock again.

2) If you are not in control the vehicle then no

3) I would think for a surf just a basic one really - on my rotaries I have used Blitz and Apexi

there is no need to keep the truck running/no need for a turbo timer unless you are traveling at silly speeds. your turbo bearing will have stopped by the time you have even at legal motorway speeds so will not need any extra lubrication..
it may also void your insurance as you are not in control of the vehicle.....

but if you are wanting one as an extra gadget then go for it,suppose you will get some funny looks walking away from your truck while it is still running lol....

A lot of my journeys are short runs to work, mostly in a hurry and definitely using the turbo. On balance unless I think this is going to be straight forward I think I'll give it a miss, especially if most of you don't think it necessary.

Only really necassary on high performance sports cars. I used to run a Mitsubishi 3000GT with twin blowers and never bothered with a TT. just use common sense, ie don't cane it and then kill the ignition.

A far better option and is where a lot of people un-knowingly damage and abuse their turbos is by using old s**t oil.

Spend the extra money on oil and fliters and change as often as you can if you want your turbo to last.

I fitted one - they dont cost a lot and are quite easy to fit.
The turbo timer isnt illegal, its only illegal to leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running (and how many of us have done that whilst we ducked into garage for a tool??).

I find that by the time I have got out, got my stuff out, or the dogs out etc it's used up the minute or 2 on the TT and I'm still legal.

I only use it after long fast journeys and not sure if its strictly neccesary or not, but it doesnt do any harm and it looks really cool.

My insurance company weren't interested in it.

I failed my SVA this morning for having a Turbo timer box still onthe Surf-despite the fact that the actual timer was disconnected. From the couple of times I have driven my Surf I would say it is slightly anoying to have to sit and wait for it to cut out.

Is that only failure you had Fergus?

Most turbo timers have a kill button if they are a seperate unit with a display. Some though dont have any display or buttons are just black boxes fitted under the dash with some dip switches to set the idle time with.

had 4 failures in all,

turbo timer
front indicator light not working
stick on reflector (£2.99 from accessory shop) should have been 2" more to the side
wires from stero amp under seat and amp under there too and not secured.

so all in all not too bad. that said i had removed everything. I covered spare whell holder holes with black electrical tape and he passed that bit- must have been having a good day

and best of all , my appointment letter said 27th but i turned uo today and was still tested within 1 hour of walking in!!!!
all excited now as will be re-tested this week and onthe road again (apologies to Willie Nelosn!

Mine has an off switch so I only turn it on if on a long journey and am going to use it. Passed MOT with it on, even after the guy asked what it was, and laughed at it!!

I'd only fit one if I was sure that I could wire it up so that the car could be left, alarmed imobilised and locked from the key fob and the timer would then cut the engine after a minute or so.

Linda's one works like this, but we only have an immobilser and factory remote C/L, we can lock the doors and walk away, it doesn't upset the cental locking.

I've just bought a 1994 SSRG 3.0TD. Would my truck have this Turbo timer fitted to it as standard?? I'm looking at getting the Clifford IntelliGuard 950 Cat1 Alarm/Imm fitted. It's a top-of-the-range alarm system supplied and fitted by INTERPART of Didcot. The owner owns a Toyota Hilux pick up "MONSTER TRUCK", so he loves the SURF dudes coming into his shop. It costs £499 fitted with tilt and motion sensor, dual zone proximity and glass break. As an optional extra, you can have the Turbo Timer programmed to work.
