  • sticky ignition switch

After driving for a while I find it really difficult to turn the ignition switch all the way off.It turns 1 notch to stop engine but is very difficult to turn the further 2 notches to allow me to remove my key. This only happens after driving, never when turning the ignition when idle,to listen to the radio etc.Any ideas what could be causing this?Would lubrication help(didn't want to do this un advised in case it damaged the inner workings of the ignition barrel)if so please advise type of lube.Cheers

Had a similar problem but it is nothing to do with the barrel if it is an Auto.

If it is an auto then the shifter needs to be well home in park or it will not let go of the key. There is a [edit]set of microswitches - error![edit] cable on the shifter that controls it. They may need adjusting/cleaning/replacing or you might just need to whack it in park a bit harder!!!

    Hope this helps.

    Rich.

P.S. YOu are putting it in park aren't you???

mines is manual transmission, but I do leave it in first gear to park in my driveway as it is pretty steep, would that have something to do with it?

Probably nothing to do with it then!

Ah well, increased my posts if nothing else

I don't know if there are any interlocks on the manual gearbox, I wouldn't have thought so but I would try it anyway, you never know.

The only other thing I can think of is wiggling the steering wheel to locate the lock. As you can see I have no real idea!

        Sorry

        Rich.

P.S. For those of you with auto's it's a cable not a microswitch

Maybe the key itself is a little worn or slightly bent.If it is best to get a new one cut before it gets any worse.

if it is the key then getting a new one cut wont make a difference as you will be cutting it to thr worn one ,if you dont have a spare to try then you might need a new one ordered from toyota with the key number.

also to lube the lock i think you would need graphite powder ask a local lock smith about that as that is what you should use on a door lock , I think
so much to do , so little money , so little time

of course it could be the barrel breaking up inside!...
just go get a new barrel and key, save wasting time and money on trial and error.
