yes you have to remove the dash, its really easy, do a search on here and you will find 2 or 3 write ups, it seems all the stereos get screwed in.
I can probably take my dash apart and put it back together in 15mins now, so dont worry about it, just try not to lose any screws.

Might be a silly question, but why do you want to remove it?

You can buy band expanders for them so you can pick up UK radio frequencies (think that is how to spell it) infact you can buy them from the site shop, but if you dont want it bang it on ebay.
I know a guy that had one of those displays on his head unit, and when I was in the car I couldnt take my eyes off it so I couldnt drive with one it would be carnage.

Take a look at the link below - It's a .pdf with all the info you need to remove/change the stereo, The toyota stereo is bolted in so you do have to strip the dash but it's not a hard job. Also if you fit your new stereo in the same way it is less likely to get stolen. Most car stereo thefts are by !!!!!!s who are simply looking for a tenner to get their next fix. They usually don't have the brains or the patience to dismantle a dashboard but they are smart enough to carry some stereo removal keys if you simply have a slot-in stereo.
Give the link a few seconds to download.

so now i have another question, why does this guide suggest I can get away with stripping out the centre console only...

                        http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/workshop/dash3.htm

while this one suggests ( in great detail and with cool pics ) that i have to strip out the entire lower dash ?

I followed the first link, removed the glove box and center console part of the dash, didnt touch the drivers side.

I did manage to get my sterio out of my old surf only taking out the centre consul, but i wouldnt advise it my old surf was a write off ,so it didnt matter but you have a great chance of breaking some of the front dash.

If you follow the one with the cool pics you will find that
                            1) You will know how to take the dash of for future reference .the quite a bit you will need to get tooo behind there at some point.

                            2) it take less than an hour to take off put strio in or take one out and then replace.

                            Hope this helps
