  • Tailgate Lock

After having run a search on this subject and having read all the information that came up, I have decided to post this thread and see if any of you can help me in my search for information and advice on a small, yet quite annoying problem that has arrisen on my normally faultless Surf.

A couple of days ago, I came to lower the tailgate on my 92 K reg SSRX. I place the key in the lock and turned it to go down.......nothing

    I tried again.....and again nothing

    I tried a third time.......and again nothing

I went into the cab and used the window button and it went down immediately

I lowered the tailgate and then tried to raise the window using the key.......it worked

So, I again tried using the key to lower the window.....and again nothing

So can anyone give me some hints as to what may be the problem and what I should try and do to rectify it?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Your window works off 4 relays hidden in a box behind the panel passenger side boot area - key - up - down & switch - up - down if you,ve only lost one of these functions it sounds like one of these has gone u/s as the motor etc is obviously ok..... or it could be a dirty contact behind your lock.Take the panel(s) off the tail & check the lock.
If you rule that out its probably a relay- bad news is the box is £380,
good news is you may get one on here from Hilux Bob or someone else.
You could put up with it but...if another one goes it could be very inconvenient.
A temporary fix may be to cut the wires to the motor & reconnect using bullet connectors , then you can always cross the wires to get a result as it fools the working relay into thinking up is down etc.
I did this & it can be useful for maintenance etc.. ..never run the glass out unsupported with the tail down as it will break

    good luck

Thanks for that Bensonsnuts. I will probably give that a go soon, but not right now as it's too dark by the time I get home.

Here's a document that describes the fix.

          Rich.

          and the circuit diagram

If it works from the button inside, theres a good chance its just the key switch in the tailgate, I'd swap the wires over, it then goes down but not up, bingo, and you havn't had a heat attack ripping all the truck apart.

Its easy to get to with the trim on the tailgate removed, and only held in with a spring clip.

If not, then go hunting the relay box.
