  • Rear Speaker mod

Is it feasible to fit standard speakers in the rear but to wire an additional 4 ohm resistor in parallel to drop the impedance to 2 ohms? Or are there additional factors to consider.

If possible does anybody know either the wattage of the standard amps, the current flowing or even the wattage of the resistor needed?

    Cheers

you need to buy 4 ohm speakers. you can go with co-axial or 2 way speakers, or 1 of the best way the component system. if you have 2nd gen rig, you can easily fit in there 4 inch speakers. Although most people just put a subwoofer at the back since this is the usual set-up- mids and tweeter in front and sub at the back. common Amplifier usually run in 4 ohm but if you want, look for amps that can run 2 ohm speakers but its no really necessary.

      says it all.

What do you want to gain by running mids at 2 ohms?

you might want to consider running the rears at 8ohms and then run them in parallel with the fronts to give you a total 2.66ohms across the set, with the rears running about 6dB down on the fronts... don't forget to add in the fact that the front speakers are nowhere near equal path lengths and average half the distance than the rears.

Rear speakers will be about 3dB down due to pathlength difference to the fronts, and the passenger speaker will be approx 180 degrees out of phase with the drivers side.
If you want to run the rear speakers at 2ohm, try and reduce the wattage going to them as they weren't designed for that amount of load.
If you take the speaker enclosure that house the rear speakers out, cut the turret out where the speaker mounts, you can get a decent 5 1/4 inch speaker in there... rewire the build in amplifier out of the equation and run your four speakers active. Kicker Competition 4 inches fit great up front and actually have quite a broad range. Run the 5 1/4inch mid-bass competitions in the rear box's just with mid-bass information to boost the fronts... and then add a sub if you'll need it. 4 channel amp with a class-d sub amp build in, plenty out there... job done.

Didn't think about the load going into the speakers only the 2ohms to the amps. Have a decent set of Alpine components and wanted to try and fit them in place of the toyota ones rather than letting them sit on a shelf. Still got a couple of amps, 6x9s and a sub which I could always fit.

Don't know where the dog will go though....
