You just connect it to the towing wire first and then the wires in the lamp cluster

    Red - tail lights
    Blue - fog light
    orange - left indicator
    Grey - right indicator
    White - earth
    Black - brake lights

              towbar wiring issues

had my surf 6wks now and just bought a trailer. they fitted the tow bar and electrics for me when i bought the surf. hooked it all up to find that the sidelights on the trailer appear to come on when i press the brake pedal, but no rear brake lights come on on the trailer. indicators appear to work fine, although on reading previous posts when i searched it appears there should be some kind of bleepy thing going on when i indicate when towing - that isn't happening. i have found a wiring diagram on the internet and my dad reckons it should be pretty easy to work out which wire is going to the wrong hole and swap them round, but wondering about this bleepy indicator thing now. anyone help?

Probably a solid question but now that I've got the bar on (it took a bit or persuasion to line up!) I need to sort the electrics so - are people just running it up under the tail gate and then under the trim/carpet to the light cluster or going in by some other route?

                  Thanks in advance,

                  T.

I just ran the trailer wiring on mine the other night, mine's a 3rd gen, but it may be the same case for you. There were some square plastic grommets near the outside edges at the rear of the cargo area, I drilled a hole in the grommet, and the wiring is able to get under the truck from there (pull the grommet and use a flashlight to confirm there is a path for the wire before drilling). Routed it where I wanted it, and zip-tied it in place from there. Hope that helps.
