  • wiring up winch and trailer hydraulic tipper

    I have a trailer - with 2 ton hydraulic tipper and a tow-bar mounted winch to wire-up.
The trailer already has light board wired up.

But the electrics to drive the hydraulic pump motor for the tipper need heavy duty wiring. There is a large round 2-pin plug for it attached to pump motor,
but i have not got a 2-pin socket for vehicle and cant find one.
The winch is a trailer winch, and has a tow-bar clamp on it, to connect to my towbar - and no wiring sockets
I also have a large round switch, with a twist button for on/off - that I will fit in the cabin somewhere.

I want to wire up the 4runner, to i can run both trailer tipper or winch off the wiring.

Can any one advise on what I need to do this and a good place (online) to order the stuff.

I guess I need heavy duty wires to positive and negative battery terminals?
Do I need any fuse protection for the battery or other electir gizmo?
as these items will no doubt draw a heavy load, and what sort of load should I anticipate?
What sort of connectors should I use to link the wires, I will have to have common ones obviously for the winch and trailer tipper motor.

for cheap cable use 50mm welding wire can be had for around £1.50 m

As for the plugs I would suggest you fit this type of power connect plug at the back of your vehicle and then whatever plug to suit the winch/tipper motor. http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.c.../battisol.html just over half way down the page.

depending on the power draw it might be worth putting in a second battery, best to put a fuse close to the battery too.

Agreed, plenty of heavy duty cable... always over engineer this stuff, do it once and never have to re-visit it.

        175 amp connectors
        (2 x Ref: PP175R)
        (1 x PPH1)
        and I suspect 2 x cover (Ref: PPP1) ...

This type of thing will let you make up and set of jump leads that you can quick connect to this connector...
Might be an idea to add an ignition switched supply to this using their 180amp relay...(R180)... so you have to use it when the engine is running...

and 180 amp circuit breakers... cheaper than fuses... just in case.
One at each end of the run. Battery end within 18" of the battery, and one at the other end where you can reach it in a hurry.
Car stereo shops should do those.. anyone that deals with Autoleads.

            Thanks for the advice guys
finally got round to ordering wires etc and stuff of extended diff breathers from : http://www.vehicle-wiring-products,
            stuff came next day!

and the other night and today worked on wiring the vehicle up.
got it all done now with a socket and wire on removable tow-bar mounted winch and on the trailer. both work great and its a joy to see the hydraulic tipper going on the trailer!!
got a nice foward/reverse control set up just in front of gear lever in cab to control things,

will probably never use the electrics now, but its there when i need it
