All the ISO adaptors over here assume that your stereo doesn't have an amp remote lead, so they connect the surf's two remote leads (elec. aerial and rear speaker amp) to the same pin on the stereo (elec. aerial) because the rear speakers use built in amps that need turning on.
Have a look here: http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/Toyota-Wiring.pdf
It's pins H and I on the ISO adaptor you need to look at. I just un-clipped that pin from the adaptor housing and connected one of the wires to the amp remote lead on my Sony head unit. Once you know which is which, you just need to fit a bullet connector to the amp one and put the aerial one back in the ISO connector.
The aerial now stays down unless I turn on the traffic announcement receiption or the auto-frequency function on my head unit. Once it's up though, it stays up even switching back to CD, but a quick off/on sends it back down. Not perfect, but my aerial isn't getting bent horizontal on the motorway for no reason any more!
Good luck.Last edited by jmc; 22 March 2005, 08:30.

They will normally stay up all the time if you have an RDS stereo fitted - i.e. even when you are listening to CD the radio can be changing frequency in the background so that when you change to radio it is always tuned in and ready.
If it was down during CD play then when you change to radio it could take several seconds to tune-in, during which time you may have to listen to static.
I suspect your original stereo did not have an RDS auto-tune function. No longer a Surf owner.

Originally posted by codlordMy advice is, if you are off road you don't want to be listening to music - you should be listening to the engine/drivetrain for problems - it would be quite easy to hit something/get a log jammed somewhere etc. not notice and do a lot of damage if you are not careful.
I prefer to listen to the car and the laughter at other people getting stuck!Tim
