lights on all the time?

my lights have stopped responding to the column switch ie as soon as the key is turned in the ignition, front and rear lights "dipped" come on in fact everything but main beam ? when the ignition key is turned off, the lights "respond" to the column switch ie you can turn them on and off?
any ideas! I need this sorting get some funny looks driving about in sunshine with the main lights on
