  • Starter motor or bad battery?

Just last week i've started experiencing an intermittent issue when starting up.

When I turn the key in the ignition, it just makes one click and nothing happens.

Sometimes it starts the next time I try, but this morning I tried a few times with nothing, I then left the ignition in the on position for about a minute and tried it again, it started this time but very sluggishly...

Is this a battery issue or something to do with the starter motor?

    Any help is much appreciated.

get batteries tested, if ok then order the starter refurb kit from Roughtrax.

To me it sounds like the very common problem of the starter motor contacts.

Mine did it a few years ago, there are a few repairs posted on the forum and on the net for this, I will try to find the other post on here where its been talked about.

I also think roughtrax do a repair kit now.

I'd definately say it's the starter motor. Mine was doing exactly the same thing very recently, changing the starter motor was the only thing that cured it.

where possible dont buy a new starter, that will cost you big bucks,
the kit from toyota is like 10 quid, and from roughtrax about 15.

                      starter refurb kit

                      hi all
i have just fitted the starter refub kit from roughtrax (excellent by the way)
car started ok,but while running,it sounds like someone has put in a bag of ball bearings or a bike chain breaking up,this rattling is every now and again.

any idea where i have gone wrong

I'd check for a tool left somewhere in the engine bay as the starter does nothing after firing your motor.
My own starter does the click thing after damp weather, spraying cables with wd40 sorts it till the next downpour, having only 120 000 k (75000miles) on the clock I wouldn't expect the starter contacts to have gone yet. H
