  • Hilux Surf bad jerks

    Hi,
Got my Surf about 3 weeks ago. 1994 3.0Ltr Petrol V6. Runs O.k. then jerky and backfires - sometimes almost dies at junctions then shoots forward - DANGEROUS. Garage I bought it from have been great at trying to solve the problem - new petrol filter, new petrol /injection pump, various diagnostic places (but don't know if they have the right kit). New exhaust tomorrow. My own mechanic thinks it might be the air flow meter as it has been tampered with. Anyone got any ideas. Look forward to hearing from you
    Cheers Mike

EGR valve may be stuck open - valve broken etc. Get the guy to check this out or disconnect it. Could be ECU malfunction, airflow meter, Pump timing, valve timing.

    Cheers

really sound like the ECU or possible one of the sender. possible the accelerator sender.

              distributer

I know nothing about the petrol engine you are talking about although i did once own a 2.2 hilux petrol pickup with a similar problem, it turned out that the shaft inside the distributer had worn out causing the distributer to shake about at differrnt rpms..
I hope i havnt made myself look daft and find out that you do not have a distributer with it being injection but if you dont maybe there is something similar going on
check for Play in somekind of moving engine parts

Hope you get to the bottom of it

                Hi
My Surf has been booked into the local Toyota place for diagnosis on wednesday - so hopefully they will know what's wrong with!!!!! - or am I just being hopefull - runs a bit better with the new exhaust though - the guy had to have it specially made cos you can't buy one off the shelf except for diesel!!!!!
                Cheers

Definately sounds like a fuel or mixture related problem. EGR valve, fuel injection or ECU. If it was a traditional non electronic ignition then I might be inclined to think ignition, maybe condensor or coil breaking down.

Only other thing I can think of would be an air leak somewhere in the induction system (inlet manifold maybe) that is upsetting the mixture and causing the problem. If it runs OK normally then it is unlikely to be timing.

                  Cheers

                    Hi Andy
I took it for a long run yesterday on expressways, A roads, B roads and small country roads - plenty of power and speed untill throttling down and starting off again - but when I get passed say 30 mph it runs great. I could check that with WD40 at the inlet manifold and see if she revs up. Will let you know - Thanks to everyone for replying - great forum.
                    Cheers

Is that a Toyota Dealer, they can get you an exhaust if they bother, I got a quote for one last week, £140, so made other arraingements!

They should find the fault on the diagnostic equipment. Did you ever run the codes yourself?

Sounds like a combination of the airflow meter and the throttle sensor. I have a '94 V6 4runner and occasionally have suffered with a similar problem when accelerating from a standing start, it lurches away!! I have found if you blip the pedal you will hear the airflow meter open wide and the engine tends to draw too much air in (this was also a problem on certain Range Rovers (so I have ben told!))

                        Just a thought........

Can you post what the Toyota dealer says please I would be interested to hear their opinion.
                        NO WORRIES!

                          Hi everyone
The plot thickens - Toyota couldn't diagnose anything cos apparantly the Surf had a gas conversion at some point but the tank has been taken off and the electronics are still in situ and live so the ecu is getting rubish signals at low revs and is probably having a brainstorm!!!!! The garage is now sending it to a gas specialist to take away the bits and put it back to petrol then have the ecu reprogrammed.
Happy days - will keep you informed - getting quite p*****d off - it's been in the garage more than driven. Nearly told the guy to swap it for a Mitsubishi but having had a go in one they're cr**p
                          see ya

huh? fit the rest of the gas kit! Rusty one runs better on gas than petrol.
and its half the price of petrol.

I would be interested to know what kit had been put on it. Usually the gas ECU runs alongside the petrol ECU mirroring what it does (this would depend on the age of it all I guess - Tony???) I cant understand why you would have to re-map the petrol ECU as it shouldn't have been altered in anyway (unless some bright spark had had it chipped????)

                              WEIRD!!
