  • Why High RPM after Start

    Hi

I am new owner of 3rd gene surf with 3RZ petrol engine, but when I start RPM goes up to around 1500 or more and after a couple of minutes it returns to 700. Is this normal or there something wrong.
With my previous 2LT diesel when I start it stays at around 500.

    Thanks

    Benny

Running on choke possibly. Try a quick stab/tap on the throttle, that always used to release the choke on my last petrol car.

Sounds normal for a petrol engine. With fuel injection there's normally an extra injector to help with starting, a bit like a choke on older vehicles.

I’m not sure if it is any different for the third gen, but on my second gen 3.0 V6 petrol you don’t touch the acellorator pedel at all when starting….
        Just turn the key.
Mine WAS a 150 bhp V6 and ran on PETROL

Benny, mines about the same (or it was until it got trashed 2 weeks ago). On start up the 3RZ-FE engine runs at about 1200-1500 for a few moments and then knocks down to 700. 1500 for 2 mins does seem a taq too high though but it's just the fuel bill you should worry about

Sounds normal to me as Vince said its the fuel enrichment system, for cold starting which then shuts down via a temp sensor, if it is staying on to long it could be the temp sensor at fault.
If it aint broke dont fix it

This is normal for a petrol engine. High rpm after starting (especially when cold) help raise quickly the temperature of the catalytic converter so that it works properly. The rpm then returns to normal when the control computer is satisfied. Hope that helps
