  • LPG conversion

I have been sending a few speculative e-mails out requesting info about getting my surf gassed. I got this back this morning:

    Engine: 3.0 V6
    Year: 1991

Thank you for visiting Dual Fuel Systems Website

To supply and install an automatic full sequential gas injection LPG system to the vehicle detailed above with the LPG tank installed in the load area or in place of the spare wheel £1800.00+vat

This vehicle will also require a flashlube oiler system as it has soft valve seats +£70.00+vat

This is the latest high quality sequential gas injection LPG equipment which will allow you to save 40%* to 45%* from your petrol fuel bill whilst retaining all the performance and drive-ability of your vehicle. (*depends on vehicle and fluctuating petrol prices).

LPGA approved conversion and certificate issued to keep your vehicle insurance valid.

Courtesy car available upon request and subject to availability.

Now that's a lot of money. Is this what I should expect to be paying?

http://www.wtv-uk.co.uk/toyota.htm can supply a kit for around £850-900 for fitting youself which includes having your conversion checked over, certificated & programmed . I think I could undertake such a task. has anyone done this?

Its about average, the second quote is from a guy who seems respectable, he posts on a LPG group I subscribe to and is helpful.

It's certainly DIY-able, but it must be fitted to current standards, ie: cable clamps the right distance, pipes laid in correct route, wiring connected to a set standard, Tank siting, etc, etc, or you'll just have to do it again.

Gas injection is the way to go, unless your seriously on a budget, its far more reliable and performs better.

        LPG conversion

Got my 2.7 petrol done for £2000 fitted including VAT + valve lube kit (would definitely get one of these if you are considering doing it). System fitted is a Ladi Renzo multi point sequential system which is self mapping, wanted a McLaren one but apparently they dont do one for the surf.
Get yerself the biggest tank you can (mines a 95 litre slung under the rear cargo area) and smile at the fact you can do 550 km for around £32 (I pay 39.9p a litre up in Aberdeen). Remember gas does run about 10-15% less efficienct per litre than petrol.
No problems to report to date, runs sweet as. Had it done by an AutoGas approved installer.
As Tony says it is possible to self fit but don't take this on if you're a novice and remember the insurance comapnies may not touch you if you can't get your DIY fit certified by an approved installer

            these guys did my cherokee,
            very tidy job.
beware the old guy, he's a bit of a salesman and i think would try and bullsh1t his way out of a problem, but i have to say i was happy with their work.
i paid £2400, incl non standard tank. they normally operate on beahlf of the green fuel co.

the was a prinz multi point system, dutch. can take up to 8 cylinders

            they do aircon as well

No, I didnt. I spent a long time thinking about it, but decided that i couldnt justify spending 2k on a truck worth less than that. Its a shame that it is sitting on my drive because i cant afford to drive it...

                  shame,
I know what you are saying.
The only thing I need help with are what other options are there?
I think you would be doing well to get 2k for it because no one seems to want a petrol 3ltr which costs 60 quid for 250miles at the moment. So then I am back thinking I might as well keep it and keep moding it. Then you hit the fact that all the left over mods are expensive. 4" lift £800 approx, LPG £2000 approx etc. but at least then I could drive it.
I was reading some where that converting a 3ltr should make its running cost afterwards the same as that of a 1.5ltr/1.6ltr engine inwhich case it would then be cheaper than my celica which then throws up other problems/issues!!!!
We need to find someone who can do the conversion for a lot less.

                  Hint hint Tony!!!!! Please!!!!!

It is a shame. I love driving my truck, I often put twenty quid in it on payday so i can pootle around at the weekends. I visit my parents in Devon quite often and a return trip can cost £80
If I had a spare few K I wouldn’t hesitate in getting a conversion done.

So my only option is to keep it until it dies, which judging by the way it is going the bottom of the doors will be rusted through in a few years but the engine will be going strong.

In hindsight I don’t think I should have bought it. I am in two minds about trading it in against a different car or putting it on eBay. Either way it will not return much value. It is worth more to me than that. (and there is always the sound of the V6).

I'm just looking into taking the cat off to perhaps make it sound a bit more gruff, big noise makes for big smiles which makes for a happier Johnny 5C!

If you want real big noise replace the airfilter with either the K&N kit or the simple metal pipe mod that is on the US forum, removing all the baffles etc makes it sound amazing at 3000revs,
the down sides are that fuel economy drops by about 5miles a tank (more air therefore more fuel) and you drive it at over 3000 revs alot just for the grin factor!!!

Air filter mods or a K&N, that will spend the money burning a hole in my pocket. Im going to surf for one this afternoon! Hopefully a bolt on K&N will be simple to find for a V6 4runnner?

                          Double post alert.....

So the Filtercharger from K&N is over 200 bucks. I have a monkey at halfrauds looking into getting one (and the price). I have just remembered that I have a old Piper-x filter in my shed from when I had a -ahem-
MX5 -ahem-.... It has a rectangular hole with a mounting plate that is rectangular. If i remember correctly it bolted straight on the air flow meter. I have just looked under my bonnet and the AFM sits right on top of the air filter case. Now if I was lucky enough that it bolted straight on, there wouldn’t be enough room anyway. There is a y-split in the air hose from the manifold which looks some kind of plenum chamber, I could remove this and get a length of hose to fit between the manifold and the AFM direct, thus creating the space required.... Hmm. this has got me thinking.

I have the full K&N filter kit which I got off ebay, luckily for me mty wife was in the USA on business so I got it sent to her so only cost me approx $180 (so 90 quid) similar to http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/K-N-F...63291242QQrdZ1

But then there are easier ways and cheaper ways to do the same thing check out:

That mod is a bag of $h1t. I did it. the only positive thing it did was slightly improve the mid range.

The induction noise was unbearable, consumption went down and pull off was slower.
I junked it & went back to the OE. Toyota spent time designing the engine to get optimum performance, consumption etc so I figured I'd stick with that
