  • Newbe question about oil changes

I believe this is my first post here, so hello all reading.

I am in Australia and recently bought a 1991 Toyota 4runner 3.0 litre v6 automatic. Today I bought auto gearbox oil and done a change and refilled the gearbox via the dip stick. Just behind the gearbox and what looked like was before the transfer case was another small sump, I opened the drain plug and let some fluid flow out and it was the same colour as the auto gear box, anyhow without thinking further I drained it all out thinking there was a refill plug somewhere. I refilled the auto via the dip stick and then was stumped with the refilling of that other sump.

At this stage I believe it's a gearbox for the overdrive (I may be wrong), what ever it is, how do I refill it ? And how much do I put in it ?.

My owners manual didn't show anything about it, only the auto drain hole and the transfer case drain hole.

While I am at it, what oil should I put in the transfer case ?, my owners manual says 90 grade oil if it's a manual and Dextron II if its a auto, to me its strange as the picture in the book shows them as the same thing.

On all my cars I have had I use synthetic oil as much as possible, so for the automatic on this 4runner I used Castrol Transmax-Z.

Also is there a place on the net that has an online version of any decent workshop manual for the 4runner ?

I have a picture of the two sumps that I can put online if the person replying needs to see what dribble I am talking about.
