Anyone an idea were I can get a new/recon engine from for my 4 runner

After having all the trouble with the Head gaskets it seemed to be fine but now its using 5ltrs of oil a fortnight. Somethings not right. People keep telling me to get rid but to be honest I love my truck and want to keep it just wish the Bl***y thing would run right.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Sounds ripe for a V8 conversion to me. More ooomph from a lighter engine. mmmmmmmmmmm

Hope you get it sorted soon.
    It's only a hobby!

Lend it to Tony for a few weeks and get it back with a nice V8 and LPG conversion???

You may get away with having new piston rings, if you are handy with the spanners this can possibly be done in the car from underneath (not sure on the V6 Petrol, can certainly be done on the Diesel as I just done it - need to remove the Front Diff assembly to do it and the heads as the pistons need to come out of the top however should be possible to do it in 2 or 3 days if you put your mind to it. If there are no leaks then I would suspect the oil rings.

Alternatively having just had new headgaskets, were the heads machined or skimmed or just decoked, if so it may be that the carbon ring has not built up at the top of the bores, allowing oil blow by. This often goes after a couple of thousand miles.

You might also try some wynns Stop Leak and stop Smoke which may help.

However 5 litres of oil a week sounds a lot for burning oil - I am assuming there is no obvious leak.
        Cheers and good luck.

Re your last paragraph does this mean that it might settle down as heads were skimmed.

Should i just see how we go ?

The v6 Surf/4runner Engines are a bit thin on the ground as Bob HILUX was chasing around for one.

Theres a good chance a new set of rings or valve shaft seals will cure it. Its worth having the heads off (again! ) and seeing how the bores look.

Pull the plugs and do a compression check, find the one (or one's) with low pressure. Then you put a teaspoon of oil down the bore, if the compression goes up again its the the rings, if nothing changes its valve seals or a hole in the piston!

It may settle down a bit however 5 litres in two weeks to me says that there is an underlying problem. as Tony says, I'd have the heads off again and look at the bores, if you want to go as far as taking off the sum you could undo the big end bearing and knock out the piston with a piece of 1x1 about 2 foot long and look at the pistons and rings.

I would have thought with burning that much oil, that you would be into some serious blue smoke out of the exhaust.

Engines do tend to burn some oil when the heads are decoked if the carbon ring built up on the top of the bore has been cleaned off as this tends to provide an extra oil seal against oil blow by. This will eventually build up again and stop the blow by.

Wynns Stop smoke will sometimes provide a cure as it coats the bores and provides a better seal for the oil control ring.

                  Cheers

Cheers Lucky for the advice. I am not getting any blue smoke but just a bit brown when i first start. thinking on 5ltrs is proberly a bit of an overestamate. I will but in 1 ltr and in a couple of days the presure drops again and engine becomes very raterly when changimg gear. The motor has just turned 140000 it my be time to send it the scrap heap and look at changing the lump. Liked the idea of sending it to tonys for a V8 conversion just wonder how much ?

                        .

Need to find yourself a V8 first. Best Rover V8 in my opinion is the Carb Rangerover engine.

Best V8 in my opinion would be a 302 cubic inch (5 litre) Ford Small block or even better a 350 ci (5.7 litre) Small Block Chevy. Both of them can be fitted with adaptor plates for the Toyota Box and are absolutely 100% bomb proof (250k miles plus with no attention). Bit heavier than the Bacofoil Rover lump, but loads of torque, very cheap parts and amazingly tunable. Have a look in the back of Classic american Magazine, there are always ones up for sale in the £300 to £800 cost range.

Rover lump should be easily obtainable as well probably again you could get a useable one for less than £500 but you would probably want to take it apart and get it all checked over - new rings, big end and main bearings, new gaskets, head gasket, regrind the valves, new valve springs etc. Should be able to build a decent reliable motor for £800 or so.

                        Cheers

Hi and merry xmas as Marky has said l am in need of a new engine for my V6 SSR-G, l have found a place who said they have several engines but they are asking £1000 for one plus vat. l would rather spend a grand on the old motor but they is quite abit of damage to the bottom end ie:
1/ 2 conrods totally U/S bent and battered
2/ 2 conrods totally seized to the crankshaft
3/ Mainbearing carrier broke in 3 peices
4/ Proberly the Crank is U/S aswell.
My SSR-G is an automatic so l cant do the V8 swop there is no conversion plate for the "Auto" only for the manual, so if you decide to bin your engine and go for a V8 let me know what you want for your old engine for doner parts.

                            3.0l V6

I have the same problem here in Los Angeles, CA.
I have 300,000 miles on 89 4 runner. 269,000 on the 1st engine, 30,000 miles on this one. I have a chronic low oil pressure problem. I will need an engine swap here soon. I am actually planning on putting in a toyota turbo diesel engine. Its the 1KZ-T, 3.0 litre, 4 cylinder engine. Diesel is the way to go if you
LOVE your truck and plan on keeping it for the long haul.
You should do a search on the web or go to toyotadieselmadness.com to find out more.
