It's getting like that here. The DVLA have said I need to produce the V5 for IV's donor vehicle. This is going to be a hoot...

OK so writing it up on headed paper didn't work either, was a long shot but unless the engine was purchased from the garage, no chance.
(I would have asked them to put it through on a paper receipt but I've already informed DVLA of its origin.)
So I'm going to wait till IX is done and we'll trundle off to the nearest Lexus Dealership (Reading).

Dear Mr Cafferty
Thank you for your recent email.
I regret to advise that an engine number alone does not enable us to advise on the model of vehicle from which the engine has originated, nor the capacity of that engine. The number does not hold this information. We would require the VIN (chassis number) of the original Lexus vehicle to enable us to confirm these details.
I am sorry that we cannot assist you in this respect and would suggest that you contact the seller of the vehicle, to try and ascertain from where the engine originated.
Yours sincerely

Bugger, I didn't take note of the chassis number.
Is there any need for the unique engine number? IXs V5C shows 1kz as engine no.
Say you pitch up at a lexus dealership, show one of the mechs under the bonnet... surely they can confirm that it is a 1uz and from that you could argue the standard output... and it runs on...
They wouldn't even have to word it precisely.. something like:
I can confirm that on (date) vehicle reg ****** had been retrofitted with a lexus 1uz style engine, in its standard form the output of such an engine is *****cc and is petrol driven.
even as I type its started to sound unreasonable.

Dealt with them before, guess I was lucky!
Btw after a long phone call I'm getting IXs V5 back, DVLA haven't updated it but its coming back.
Won't be getting the lexus's back because I noted in the original letter that it had been broken down and sold on, they're sending a notification "relieving me of ownership"...
so back to square 1.

Just leave the logbook as it is but make sure it's insured as a 4.0 petrol.
