lol, its easy, a 1992 surf will have to pass the emission test for a 1992 surf, regardless of what motor is in it.
pre 1992 petrol cars have less to meet, 92-to 95 go by a official book, if a match isn't found its CO<=3.5% and HC<=1200ppm, after 95 the levels are tougher, being CO<=0.3% HC<=200ppm, which is almost impossible to achieve without a cat, or Running on LPG.
I think from 2001ish you HAVE to have cat fitted regardless.

Yep, as long as the emissions fall within the parameters it'll pass. They're tested with a hot engine at idle and at approx 3000rpm.
It's tested as a cat-less vehicle.

If testing a vehicle with a cat because thats what the flowchart says ( post Aug 1992 and on the database) how could you do a test if it had no cat, dont they fit a lead to the lambda sensor for the test ?

The cat it's self does not get tested unless the vehicle is post 8 2002

Are the allowable emissions for test purposes not different depending on whether a cat is fitted or not. Would that not mean you were almost certainly doomed to fail ? If the vehicle has no cat yet the database says it should have, would that not be a fail in itself?

They will be slightly different, but (in my experience) a vehicle with the cat removed will pass its emissions test so long as the rest of the gubbins are OK. I don't think a missing cat. is grounds for a fail, just like no ARBs isn't a fail.

Personally I would fit them if legislation required them, even with a friendly MOT man you could still get pulled by VOSA roadside.But having read the comments from the more knowledgeable out there if its grey I wouldn't bother, spend the money on some more lovely soulnd making juice!

No...it's all very relevant. When a vehicle also falls just short of an sva test, but undergoes a major modification( á la lexurf), you have to take into account, the original vehicle was uncatted.

When I take the Lexurfs for MOTs, the tester sticks a probe in the end of the exhaust and the emmissions must be within a certain limit both at idle and 3000rpm.
