1uzfe into 2.4TD surf

i will have a look at the wiring when i go out and play on it! it was green/red=signal blue=earth & black orange=12v should be OK. it is a different TC as the one was originally on as that broke just before the swap so i dont know if the new TC speedo works i can put the the one form teh broken on in as i know that works but will get to the bottom of it somehow

another little problem im trying to solve is the solinoid to release the lever rather than using the red button as the brake switch goes into the ECU so got to find the wire that comes out the ECU that gives the signal / power to release it? or is it red button from now on?

cant find it on the FSM wiring diagrams of either the surf or the lexus

I had a problem with the release and was using the red button for a while until I opened up the console and found a sweet little burnt printed circuit on a board which operates the release pin! So it was either changing the setup = ££££££ or just eliminate the locking pin! Guess which option I used? And from now on the lever still locks in place but I don't have to press the brake to release the shift lever! Sorted and still safe enough!

Tee off that brake switch wire and connect to the shift lock wiring at the base of the shift lever.

Can't remember which wire at the moment, I'll have to go and look at mine.
I'm using the Lexus shift lever and centre consol now, but the wiring is the same as the Surf's.

done that now my brake lights work and the shift lock works aswell! the hardest thing was to try and solder 3 wires together easy to do 2 but getting the 3rd one on a bugger especially when just dangling in the air

still no good on the speedo i checked the wires were right and getting power so think it could be a faulty speedo motor will take the one out the the broken TC as i know that works see what happens then.

Vince / Ross what do you do to a full tank out of interest?

i havent checked properly yet as mine is having a few running issues! it seems to be suffering from a stutter! the only long run i have done was the 100 or so miles back from Vinces and that took about half a tank so not to bad considering.

i think mine it running a bit rich i have new sensors on it just hope i have wired it up right and they work and the ECU is controlling the fuel injection etc??

have wired them up like the diagram below universal to toyota does it matter which heater goes with which??

When driving a little gas is fine and full blast is ok Anything inbetween int it missfires have changed leads, plugs,rotors dizzy caps, tps. Still no luck! My o2 sensors only have 1 wire as it's a celcior not a ls400

worked it out its running about 12 mpg and off road will be a tad worse. thinking of getting it LPG would equate to about 22mpg in petrol equivalent which is better than the surf when it was a 2.4!?! but think will get a 150 l tank as i think you could get 300miles out of that a 100l tank would be 200 the same as when it was a 2.4 diesel. cost is about £1400 for the new version conversion and if did 10000 miles pa you would get the money back for the conversion in the 1st year! so im thinking of doing it! thining of putting the tank just behind the back seat as not really use it as utility vehicle more of an off roader so not too bothered still get 5 in and room in the boot! 2x 90l tanks about 400mm dia by 800mm long

still get the same noise and slight down on performance friend has done his V8 92 range rover and all work fine!

any thoughts anyone?

hasnt had a new MoT yet as still waiting for V5C to return with updated info on it? if its running rich then im not too sure where to look have checked the spark plug but they are new but the end is OK there is a bit of soot around the end of the thread. so any thoughts? its got to be an air fuel mixture problem somewhere?

any thoughts?

looking at lexus figures it was about 14mpg around town anyway and with 2" suspension lift and 2" body and 32" off road tires im sure the the mpg would decline a bit.

Latest report from Brian1975 who has got his V8 surf on the road last week is that he's getting mpg figures comparible to the 2.4 that was in it.

roughly i think the surf used to do 16.5mpg? 320kms / 55l without an accuate speedo which still isnt working and nothing to measure how far i have gone i cant be sure of mpg but have done a few journeys and on google maps noted down where i have been and what i have put in etc and worked it out to around town and carriage ways to 13.5 mpg still getting it gased on monday so that will now go up to 27mpg so can do 170 miles for about £35 nice and if can get it running even better then figures will only go up!

the guy checked the check connector on the engine to see if the ecu shown any fault codes and nothing shown up i.e. running rich / lean malfunction code oxygen sensors seem ok but no fault either for the speedos which has a bit worrying as i know they are working but not properly! well the ecu speedo seems ok as its changing gear but the speed on the dash is still wrong

So the speedo IS working but not indicating the correct speed?

Don't know how you've plumbed in the radiator, but here's what I do to enable the fan to fit on the engine side of the rad to act as a 'puller'.

Chop out the centre support and down each side of the radiator support panel....(helps loads with lifting the V8 in and out too)


Then weld a tab on either side for fixing rad back in place with a couple of rubber mounts.........



Also, chop out a slim section of the lower crossmember.....

Fit rad and then fab up new side sections to the bonnet assembly so that the bonnet still works as normal.....(Mine is just placed there for photos , will be welded in when V8 is fully fitted)


As you can see, almost two inches can be gained between engine and radiator, enough to fit the electric fan and a cowl.

yeah speedo is working but not properly say im doing 15 when im doing 60 havent a clue why its like that? any ideas?

looks nice that as a puller fan mine is a pusher fan and couldnt fit the vertical middle metal piece back in so have to slam the bonnet to get it closed!

what do you think yours is doing roughly to the gallon?

Sounds like the speedo is only receiving half a signal, or it's not converting the signal correctly.
My dash is in pieces at the moment, as soon as I've put it back together, I'll make notes of what goes where.
Have you tried conecting the Surfs speedo to see if it the sensor is working correctly?

I trimmed the part that the vertical support bolts too on Hiroler's truck to move the rad back and fit the fan on the engine side, as he's got a 3" bodylift.
what do you think yours is doing roughly to the gallon?

Mine is doing 19 mpg combined.
