  • Starting Problems

I have just got my Surf (1994 3.0 Diesel). It intermittently has a starting problem as follows. There is no immobiliser fitted.

Turn ignition key - all lights come on as normal with Voltage good.
Turn kety to start - nothing - I can hear a click and lights dimm slightly.

It will eventually when left fire up ok but this needs sorting.

My thoughts are starter motor (solenoid) as (when lights dim) feed must be getting to the solenoid.

Is there a relay somewhere for the starter?

Am I missing something - and where can I get one of these from (part no if poss please).

Could be as simple as dirty battery terminals or bad contact on starter motor.Starter motor solenoid contacts may need replacing.

Where can I find the starter moter - and what is the easist way to get to it.
Looking from the top I cannot see anything.
There is a sump guard underneath.

        Thanks

The starter is on the nearside of the engine underneath all of the plumbing and near the autobox dipstick.

A brief description of how to get it out:

Jack Surf up, N/S wheel off, rubbers on inside of arch off to give access and light (Stick the bonnet up too). The second bolt is a nasty one but it can be got with a ring/C spanner and a lot of patience, I think that I attacked it from underneath and it was hiding behind something and is at the rear of the housing.

The real fun is to be had in getting it out through all the plumbing, it will only come out going up! It's even harder getting it back in and it helps to have a mate giving you a hand.

Also get your battery checked out. If you've lights are dimming, its getting power via the soloniod, if the starter contacts have gone, you wont have much of a power drop as the main motor won't be getting any power, only enough to work the soloniod.

              Thanks all

I have cleaned the battery contacts and all seems ok at present. I will get a set of starter contacts etc just incase.
