    Hi!

I've been trying to collect information / advise on carrying out an engine / transmission swap on my 1982 Hilux Single Cab Pick-up and came upon this website.

I bought the pick-up recently with an L engine and busted gearbox and transfer case. After scouting around I've located a 3B diesel with complete transmission from a 70 series Land Cruiser.

Any idea if the 3B will fit? I've been told that the engine might be too high and the gearbox too big...

    All help appreciated.

    Simon.

I think that advice is pretty sound. The 3B engine is very tall, not sure about the gearbox.

Also the 3B engine is somewhat agricultural albeit a completely sound engine with no know faults. It has very little power but a good torque spread.

I would suggest that if you already have the engine, sell it, they are pretty rare and someone with a BJ40/BJ41 etc would snap your hand off for it. Then get something a bit newer for the Lux. If you want diesel, get yourself a second hand 2L engine or a 2LT if you can get one. If you want power go the Rover Bacofoil V8 route.

    Cheers

Thanks Andy, appreciate your quick response and advice. I hadn't bought the 3B so no unnecessary expense there.

I spent last evening calling the 4x4 club members about 2L and 2LT engines and managed to locate a 3L engine and gearbox in a wreckers yard a few hours out of town and will go and have a look on the weekend.

      Best regards,

      Simon

3L engine is a good one, you can even fit the turbo and ancillaries of the 2LT engine to it if you can get one. You then would get a 2.8TD engine which would give you a lot more power and torque than the 3B engine anyway.

Plus the 3L engine is standard fitment in some markets on the pickup so fitting it is relatively easy - you may need to move some engine mounting points though.

        Cheers
