Heating Borked (no control) Help?

Hi All,
[edited because I realise my post isn't super clear]

Basically I have a problem with my heating system. Is starts off cold and then warms up slowly with the engine and then won't cool at all in any way.

- Air Con button doesn't seem to work (the temp slider does nothing useful)
- Temp sensor for engine seems to sit happily at middle
- I flushed the coolant once (no joy)

I've bought a new Thermostat BUT I could really do with some advice (before I flush the coolant, install the thermostat and find out that didn't work) as to what else I can check or replace.

Basically i'd rather tackle it as one problem rather than constantly re-flush my coolant.

So.

Is there anything else I should look at?

you do know you have to
have the fans running for
the aircon to work
also hows the gas in it
if you fire it up and leave on
tick over then put fan on low
then press air con button if
the aircon is working the revs will
rise a bit you can hear the motor change
if it dont then i would say you need a regas

Yup i've had the fan running (I usually have it off at the moment once the heat has gone past scalding - unless it's a cold day).

That being said I didn't know the trick about Air Con.
Apart from the slight increase in revs is there any other way to tell if it needs re-gassing? (I've seen a 'sight' glass in what I assume is the aircon but i'm not sure what i'm looking for)

The Fuse for the aircon looked okay so apart from the revs (which I'll check today) and however the sight glass is used, is there any other thing that might link to aircon to see if it's working?

running engine. blower blowing.
aircon on - revs increase slightly
aircon off - revs decrease slightly

so 'something' is working - it's just not actually cooling anything.
