  • getting hot when towing

I was towing my cattle trailer yesterday and noticed the temp guage climbing as I went up hills and going back down as we descended. The rad appears to be clear. Am I wise to change the water pump and thermostat? I dont want it to cook its head.

Buy and install a new viscous fan instead, RT do an Aisin one.

    Cheers

the fan hubs should be refillable.
the silicone oil in them tends to wear out. pull it apart, clean it out, refill.
there is a few write ups around.
when cold and engine off, it should be stiff to turn. also if it free wheels when you turn the engine off its faulty.

some have had success in tweaking the bimetallic thermostat in it so it comes on a bit earlier.

I think I will go for it and change the oil in the fan clutch! My only question is how much do I put in? as I can't find a definitive answer

It's been a few years since I did mine, but if I recall correctly, I bought 2 18ml vials of 10,000 centistoke silicone from Toyota (but it can be purchased from eBay). I used this amount, but I have heard of people using a bit more (up to another vial), but this may not be necessary. If you go by the instructions in the file I posted above, you will find out how much you need, and it will depend upon if you empty the clutch out, or just top it up.
