  • Cracked pre-combustion chamber (pic inside)

    Hello all,

I'm working on rebuilding a 1KZ-TE from a KZN185 over here in the USA, and ran into a possible issue after receiving the head back from the machine shop.

There are cracks in all 4 pre-combustion chambers (precups, swirl pots, whatever they're called). Has anyone ever seen this before? Obviously replacing them would be recommend, but they seem like relatively hard to find and expensive parts. Not to mention the lack of availability in my country. Any input is appreciated!

This is probably the worst one. It looks like the cracks would go all the way past the fire ring on the head gasket.

Hi mate, I'm surprised no one has responded yet. As I understand this is common after overheating. You need to get the head replaced and get a known-good, not a cheap chinese remake.

How's the block? Did it need any attention? I've come here to ask this as my mum was not checking the water temp gauges and mine overheated. I'm about to buy a new pre-built head from this link: http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/toyota-4...nder-head.html

BUT only if the block is okay.
    Oh Nana, what's my name?

In this motor, a glow plug tip broke off and got into the cylinder, damaging a piston and scoring the cylinder walls. I had it bored 0.5mm over, but the didn't need to deck it.

As far as I understand, Roughtrax won't export those heads unless you send them a core first. I looked into the same thing but I'd have had to mail them my current head.

I ended up getting a new set of precups installed and machined. The engine is running great! Now to figure out why the 1KZ's transfer case has a different shift pattern.
