By the way, that on the youtube video was the "thingy" that the garage said was at fault, (it runs on a 5v supply I believe), took it to bits, (it's not easy to get at), cleaned it tested it, put it back in, no solution!!, I bet that its the ecu that's playing you up, though where you can find an ecu diagnostic check in the Bahamas I have no idea. arh.

if I had an ecu problem, wouldn't the system detect it and the check engine light be illuminated?

No, not necessarily.

Basically, it's the ecu that monitors the other functions, if they go wrong the ecu detects this and "gives" a warning, if the ecu itself "throws a wobbly" it can hardly warn you about itself, if you see what I mean, lol. arh
