  • Engine will not start, Help Please!

    1995 Hilux Surf Diesel

    Model KD-KZN130W-GKPQT

    Frame KZN1320-9074028

Over a month ago, I was coming out of a business parking lot. As I accelerated out from the lot, my engine lost power abruptly and shut off. I then preceded to restart the vehicle and continued on my way. I did not think much of the issue because the vehicle ran fine for a while after that incident, however a very faint sputter at idle could be notice if you where attuned to the vehicles performance

Four or more weeks after the incident, I was driving along leaving work when the engine died on me again. this time I was unable to restart the vehicle. The next morning while I was waiting on the tow truck driver, I decided to try start the vehicle. the vehicle started and ran for a while. I drove the jeep for about 5 minutes, then it started to lose power again slowly died. after that the vehicle would not start anymore.

    Troubleshooting

    tested crank position sensor
    changed fuel filter

took the injector line off to see if any fuel flow to the injectors while I cranking the engine. No fuel flow to the injectors. Fuel seen leading to the injector pump

    Conclusion

I found the fact that the engine started after sitting over night suspicious.
I am hoping that it is not the very expensive Fuel injector pump.

If there is anything else I can check or look at, please let me know.

      thanks for your response,

there is no aftermarket immobilizers installed. Everything is stock

I did forget to mention that I did wash the engine down the day before. did not think that that was an issue because I did it many time before and the engine ran fine until late evening the next day

Sorry, its a Hilux Surf 3.0 Diesel. Where I am from we tend to call all SUV type vehicles jeeps

have your ecu unit checked out. that happened to me, everyone said its the pump/filter etc etc. I had the ecu checked by "the ecu doctor" he repaired it, its run fine ever since. hope this helps, arh

the ecu unit is in the passenger footwell, just in front of the door, unscrew the cover, then the ecu unit, remove the plugs and have it checked out by a ecu expert??, takes 5 mins to remove it, 15 mins to put it back

If it was me I'd change the fuel pump relay as relays can go weak and kick out when they feels like it.

I went down that road. mechanics from various garages, (and the AA) said and took to bits the pump/fuel filter/relays etc. In the end I read on here about the ecu playing up, took it out, like I said 5mins, sent it to the ecu doctor, he checked it out rang me and told me what was wrong with it ,repaired it I put it back in, and away we went. I appreciate that the OP is in the Bahamas, but it is still the simplest thing to do to have it checked out and know that it is okay FIRST, if it is good then start investigating the injector pump and ancillaries.

I had the system checked to see if the crank shaft sensor was working and sending signals to the computer. I will inquire further to see if the diagnostic that was ran also would indicate any computer issues

hi again, it's got nothing to do with the crankshaft sensor, if it's the ecu that's at fault, it'll be the injector pump circuit in it that's at fault, mine was " there's a problem with the 5 volt relay telemetry and a problem with the injector telemetry".

my truck did the same, I was driving along, and the engine just died, sat for a minute wondering/cursing!!, tried the key, away we went. Next morning, truck started, got 2 mile down the road, same thing again, called the AA, he said it was dirty fuel, changed the fuel filter, (which was clean), wouldn't start. next morning it started, then it stopped and wouldn't start. garage took the fuel pump, (the little thingy below and behind the injector pump to bits) no different, that was when I searched on here for "help wont start" if you search on here you will find my thread. learnt about the ecu playing up, had nothing to lose so I took it out, I didn't disconnect the battery though, but it cannot do any harm to do so. the rest you know. hope it works out for you, arh

                            Thanks for the reply,

I don't know where I could get a diagnostic ran. I will check with my locale dealer to see if they do ecu diagnostic without having to carry the whole vehicle to them. if I cant find someone to check the ecu right away, I will clean the 3 filter strainers inside of the Fuel Injection Pump and see if that does the trick

Like I said, you don't need to take the whole vehicle to them, just the ecu, mine went 300 miles to be checked ,(and repaired), while the truck sat on my drive.
