  • is my alternator powerfull enough? And what batteries should I be using?

    Hi I have a Toyota Surf 1995 3.0l . It's a japan import.

My alternator stopped working so I bought a new one which is 80 amps hour.

I have a twin battery set up like in the pic below. I am looking to buy 2 new batteries but am unsure of the best ones to buy. Would 2 x 50 or 55ah be OK? Or would 2 x 77ah be better?

If they were too big would they have problem getting charged correctly?

Also would silver calcium be fine to use? I have read they need a different alternator which charges at 14.9 instead of 14.4 or something like that?

Anyone know what is the best?

Here is a twin batter surf same as mine:

I have found 2 x silver calcium batteries for £50 each
    the Ampere Hours is 77ah
Cold cranking Amps (CCA) is 780
    and 5 year Warranty

Would these be OK to use? they are more powerful and bigger 096 (they will fit though) I have until 4pm gmt today to order so if anyone knows that would be great

Also would 2 x 096 batteries be OK to use? They have the + at the right of the battery. I can get them to fit by extending the connection leads. Or do I need one battery to be [[ - left + right ]] and the other to be [[ + left and - right ]] ? can they both be [[ - left and + right ]]?

I can't see it would make any difference does anyone know?

    thanks

      hello boyo
i don't think it makes any diff to put more powerful batts on
on my old one i took one batt off and put a caravan high power
leisure batt on run with single batt til she went that was 5 years ago
and i know that it is still on the same batt now with no probs
i had to fiddle with the wires a bit and extend the batt tray a bit
      but all was good
i,m in swansea as well sad n it
      the old git

        Alright bachgen..

I ended up getting the 2 more powerful silver calcium and it's starting really easy now. My alternater when the surf is running is showing 15volts on both batteries so I'm pleased with this
