Just done a lot of reading on line and some say as long as in neutral you can tow away forever and a day and some say it will mess up your transmission, so which one are we to believe ? as I always thought that towing was a no no with an automatic.

reading with interest as never owned an auto....

You would think that in N everything was good to go wouldn't you? Or would you?

I have read that automatics with flood lubrication(splash lubrication) can be towed. The lubrication of the gearbox starts if the wheels are turning, no need for the engine to run.

Automatics which need a pump to lubricate the gearbox can not be towed whithout damage. The pump is driven bij het engine.

Planetary transmissions, CVT, Honda automatics, dual clutch transmissions and VW/Audi automatics are better of not having a tow.

Questions remains what kind of transmission is in the Sufr/4runner?

              AHHHHHHHH
              That makes sense! Perfect sense.

But still we are unsure as to our own vehicle

Quality, this is what vehicle enthusiasm is all about.

Put a extra litre of transmission oil in it, and it will be fine to tow, don't forget to drain it out before running the vehicle.

Alternatively, disconnect and remove the prop shaft, then you can tow for ever without damaging the gearbox.

Cmon chaps, a bit of perspective. Youre talking about moving it 40m at tortoise pace. This will cause no harm whatsoever. ( In my opinion )

done that several times with several surfs, and i think thats the best and safe way to tow, putting the 2 levers on N as well
