  • Manual Radiator without the oil cooler?

    Hello,

Having just bought a Surf for towing and general offroad fun, also being a sucker for modifications on my japanese imports, it would seem the first obvious modification would be a trans cooler. It will be towing horses all over and I am all about modifying to prolong life and get the smoothest operation from a machine. Its on 72k at the moment and I fancy taking her to 300k if I can. Taking away heat seems to be NO1 priority.

I am on the look out for a 25 row mocal cooler at a decent price and intend to mount an oil temp sensor in the tran box and a gauge in the cab. Also an AUX fan behind the cooler on a toggle switch in the cab for when the going gets really rough.

My question, after serching all of my local sources is this.

Is there a manual radiator available that has not got the oil cooler blocking the water flow? Maybe the UKDM 4Runner manual?

And also is this over kill? Or is the oil cooler in the rad not near as much of a hinderance to engine cooling as the internet research has shown it to be?

I also intend swapping out the thermostat for a prado one which I understand opens 5c or so earlier than the surf? Again is this even worth doing in the scheme of things? When in the boonies up and down hill with two ton on the back this might just make all the difference? Or not.

Thanks for any advice and pointers anyone has.

Yes, there is a manual radiator for the 3rd Gen, it's fitted on the manual ones.
If you are planning to put that many miles on it and towing horses around go for the original Toyota one, it will last you forever.
    Cheers

cheers I thought there must be. It would seem my local radiator guy is not aware of this being available. Everything I have seen on offer so far is an auto rad sold for either manual or auto. Frustrating but good to know there IS one out there.

Any idea what Toyota might charge for such an item? And part numbers? I have a feeling they will ask me for a chassis number when I call and I will only have an auto one to give them
I generally go for OEM on such important items unless an obvious upgrade is available. Seen too many lads on the side of track with bust chinese rads hissing fluids all over the place to chance it!

        Part number 16400-67110

        Check this link:

To be honest an auto surf would not be my first choice for towing that sort of weight around.
If sticking with a 4x4, I would go for a manual 4.2 Land Cruiser or, if on a budget, a manual Prado.

        Cheers

Wow thats amazing. Cheers. perfect! I never could have found that. Props.

If I was just towing 'stuff' I would agree with you without a doubt. Unfortunatly it needs to be an auto as its going to be towing horses. The missis is world class standard in her field so the ponies need to arrive in a happy condition. The transmission shunt inherant in a manual transmission when towing would knacker them out by the time they got to an event

The surf was the obvious choice between that and the colorado/prado for me and a manual box would, believe me, have been my choice. I am not a fan of auto's as a rule. I lime to be connected to the road in as many ways as possible.
As it is I have to cater to the needs of these ponies and I am hoping I can mitigate any serious issues with a number of heat and efficiency mods.

Is there any reason a surf cant do what an auto disco cant that seems to be what they all have in the horse scene? or an L200 etc? (3.5ton tow notwithstanding on the disco) I ask humbly as I dont know.

No, I don't think so, in fact I think it will probably be better than LRs and Mitshubishis!

I didn't realize that there was such an issue with horses. In that case go ahead. With your manual rad and separate autobox cooler you should be fine.

            Cheers

Thanks. really appreciate the part number.

Yeah she asked me how tired I might feel standing up with nothing to lean on for a couple of hours as the gearbox shunts back and forth at each junction and roundabout. I saw her point and bowed. lol.

              Cheers again.
