  • Engine noise when moving

hi my 1991 3 ltr diesel surf runs well smooth uses no oil but now and then intermittently I get a clanging noise a bit like a bearing breaking up coming from front of engine it only does it when driving along road, never when stationary temp is normal no water leaks so I wonder if water pump is going or maybe a belt tensioner starter motor sticking etc. so my question is anyone else ever had these symtems and what was the cause.

Are there any more 'indicators' that you can add to when you hear the noise? Like going up or downhill, cornering, braking, accelerating, slowing down etc etc?

Up or down hill or on flat but I noticed fan belt slack so I adjusted it now hardly any noise but when it does it's not so loud more a altenator bearing noise, I'm going to ride it out see what develops it's charging normal not overheating no water leaks, it's had a engine change at some point in its life it's registered at dvla as a 3ltr got 3 ltr ln130 on makers plate and 1991 I think it's a special.

          Loose alternator pulley perhaps?

I used to get a terrible screach from the engine occasionally. Turned out to be the A/C belt slightly loose!

Check the crank pulley, the rubber inbetween breaks up and the crank pulley falls off.grab hold of it and give it a good wiggle,

Thanks for that jameswallace, you have confirmed what I thought , I adjusted this belt and so far no noise it was very slack before I may get a new belt as the adjuster is at end of adjustment.
